Singer Lorde has announced her first original solo single in almost four years with What Was That.

The 28-year-old singer, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O’Connor, announced the track in a post on Instagram with a picture of her in a red top with sweat dripping off her face.

What Was That is the New Zealander’s first new music of her own since 2021’s Solar Power, coming after she released a cover of Talking Heads’ cover of Al Green’s Take Me To The River last year, as part of the Everyone’s Getting Involved tribute album to the New York new wave pioneers.

In the Instagram post, Lorde said: “My new song What Was That. Out soon.”

The singer previously teased the new track in a TikTok post which showed her walking through a park as the song played in the background, with her website being turned blank but for the picture of her sweating, taken by photographer Talia Chetrit.

Since her debut LP Pure Heroine in 2013, Lorde has released an album every four years, with Melodrama coming in 2017 and psychedelic left turn Solar Power being released in 2021.

It comes after the Royals singer joined Charli XCX on stage at Coachella to perform Girl, So Confusing, which she features on a remix of, which was released last year.

After their performance Charli, whose real name is Charlotte Aitchison, is reported to have told the crowd: “Lorde summer 2025.”

Beginning her career in 2009, Lorde has achieved a UK number one single in Royals as well as three UK top 10 albums, and is best known for songs such as Green Light, Homemade Dynamite, Team, and Solar Power.

She has also won two Grammy Awards, taking home best pop solo performance and song of the year for Royals.
