Examples of the high speeds detected yesterday include a motorist travelling at 78km/h in a 60km/h zone on the R639 in Glanmire.

So far, 106 vehicles have been detected travelling in excess of the speed limit on National Slowdown Day.

One driver was detected driving 151km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N4 Clongawny, Mullingar, Westmeath.

More than 750 drivers were caught speeding on National Slow Down Day, including one motorist driving at 194km/h

Already 63 people have died on Irish roads this year, 14 more than at the same time last year. 

It's estimated 30% of fatal collisions are as a direct result of speeding or inappropriate speed.
