Garry McCarthy was given a standing ovation at the 33rd annual awards ceremony in The Metropole Hotel yesterday.

A number of national awards will be presented at the event, which will  include contributions from prominent speakers and guests of honour.

Awards founder and organiser, Manus O’Callaghan, said Byrne was a “colossus of Irish broadcasting” and always enjoyed “particularly high ratings in Cork.”

Niall Cleary and Emelie FitzGibbon have been named as the winners of this month’s Cork Persons of the Month award.

This year's nominees have all made significant contributions in their respective organisations.

Stephen Teap has been awarded Cork Person of the Month for September to mark his activism and commitment on behalf of all those affected by the CervicalCheck scandal.
