'You need more than a State pension to retire on'

Reliance on the State pension isn’t a retirement strategy, says Laura Farrell, CEO of the Retirement Planning Council of Ireland (RPC), after a ‘modest’ rise announced in this week’s budget
'You need more than a State pension to retire on'

Your quality of life in retirement is too important to rely on annual pension increases in the budget

Another October, another modest pension rise in this week’s budget, and another reminder that the State pension alone won’t ensure a fulfilling retirement.

As the dust settles on the budget, pensioners across Cork and the country will be calculating what the €10 weekly increase means for their household bottom line.

Any additional support is welcome, and we shouldn’t dismiss the effort to provide it.

But the honest, practical reality is that when you factor in the relentless cost of groceries, home energy, and everyday essentials, a modest bump like this leaves many feeling as though they are merely running to stay still.

The fundamental truth we must confront is that the State pension was never designed to act as a complete, comfortable retirement income on its own.

Whether a budget delivers €10, €15, or €20, relying on annual government announcements to close the gap between basic support and what you actually need to live well, is a precarious strategy.

The State pension is a baseline - a vital foundation - not the entire house.

Real retirement adequacy isn’t created in the Dáil on Budget Day; it depends on decisions made years, often decades, beforehand.

In our 50 years at the Retirement Planning Council of Ireland, we have learned that successful retirement rests on two essential pillars.

The first is, of course, financial clarity - understanding your pensions, savings, timing, and managing expectations.

But the second pillar is deeply personal: maintaining purpose, establishing new routines, looking after your health, nurturing relationships, and deciding how and where you want to live this next chapter.

When public support is tight, both pillars become even more critical, ensuring you make the absolute most of what you have built.

This is why pre-retirement planning needs to become a standard, expected part of working life across Ireland, rather than an afterthought squeezed into the final few months before finishing up.

Everyone’s circumstances differ widely, which is why early, tailored guidance matters.

Through our Mid-Career Planning programme, we encourage workers -and the employers who support them - to engage with their future while there is still plenty of time to shape it.

We strongly urge business leaders across Cork and Munster to invest in their people by providing access to comprehensive retirement preparation early in their careers.

Crucially, support shouldn’t stop on your last official day at work. Retirement today is not a static endpoint; it is a dynamic phase of life that can easily last 20, 30, or more years.

Personal circumstances evolve, as do economic realities. That is why the RPC provides lifelong follow-up support at no extra charge, ensuring our members always have a trusted sounding board no matter what changes down the road.

Budgets will come and go every October, and political debates over pension increases will continue. But your quality of life in retirement is too important to leave to annual political cycles.

Don’t wait for the next budget to think about your future - take control, seek guidance early, and start building the retirement you truly want today.
