Premier SHC: Kanturk bridging 14-year gap as they gear up for semi-final debut

Kanturk will bridge a 14-year gap on Sunday when they take on St Finbarr’s in the semi-finals of the Co-op SuperStores Premier SHC.

Following an impressive quarter-final performance to dethrone champions Sarsfields, Kanturk will make their debut at the last-four phase in the SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh clash, which has a 2pm throw-in time.

It will be the first instance of a maiden semi-final appearance for a club since 2012 – back then, both Bishopstown and Ballymartle were appearing at the penultimate stage for the first time, the seventh and eighth clubs to do so since the turn of the millennium as the championship underwent a greater democratisation.

Fourteen years is the longest such gap across the last century – the previous longest was between Youghal’s semi-final debut in 1972 and Milford making it there in 1985.

Of course, reaching a semi-final for the first time and going all the way to lift the Seán Óg Murphy Cup are two very different things; in the last hundred years, only Éire Óg (1928), Erin’s Own (1992) and Newtownshandrum (2000) have managed to win the title in the same year as their premiere in the last four.

Of the clubs operating at premier senior hurling level in 2026, Newcestown and Fr O’Neill’s are waiting for their first appearances in the semi-finals; if Blarney or Watergrasshill were to win the senior A championship this year, they would be added to that sub-set.

If they were to beat the Barrs, a first top-tier county hurling final outing would be the latest step in what has been a magical odyssey for Kanturk.

When the premier intermediate hurling championship came into being in 2004, Kanturk were among those divisional junior A championship winners from the previous year who were included in the ‘new’ third-tier IHC.

That title was won in 2013, with the premier IHC following in 2017. Included in the senior A grade following the reformatting of the county championships in 2020, Kanturk won it the following year and have been i the top tier since.
