Cork duo Tommy Walsh and Steven Sherlock have been rewarded for outstanding seasons with nominations for the PwC All-Star football awards.
It's a further sign of the county’s upward curve after a campaign that delivered Division 2 promotion, a Munster final, and an All-Ireland quarter-final against eventual champions Mayo. The Rebels lost by five points in Croke Park.
Walsh was one of Cork’s most reliable performers throughout, anchoring the defence with a level of authority that became central to John Cleary’s game plan.
Operating at centre-back, his blend of physicality, composure and reading of danger helped Cork tighten their structure and close out tight games.
Walsh’s consistency stood out, with his two-pointer in the win away to Donegal one to remember. His leadership marked him as one of the county’s most dependable figures.
Sherlock’s inclusion comes on the back of one of the most productive attacking campaigns in the country. The St Finbarr’s forward was Cork’s primary scoring outlet, delivering repeatedly in pressure moments.
His accuracy from placed balls, movement inside and ability to win his own ball were crucial in the league push and again in championship.
Sherlock’s temperament was a hallmark of Cork’s season: late frees, tight angles, and big scores.
For Cork, the nominations serve as validation of a year that restored momentum and belief. Promotion, a provincial final, and a competitive showing against the eventual All-Ireland winners marked genuine progress.
Their All-Star recognition is individual, but it also reflects a team moving in the right direction.
Both will be hoping to end a 14-year wait for a Cork footballer to make the All-Star team when Colm O’Neill and Aidan Walsh were honoured in 2012.
