Avondale celebrate opening of their new facilities amid great fanfare and a visit from an Taoiseach

Avondale Football Club marked a very special occasion last Saturday with the official opening of its newly built dressing room facilities at Beaumont Park, in what was a fantastic day of celebration for the club and the wider footballing community.

The new development provides the underage in the club with a modern, welcoming facility that will benefit players, coaches, officials, volunteers, parents and supporters for many years to come.

The impressive new development consists of four new dressing rooms, a dedicated referees’ room, unisex toilets, a storage room and a new spectators’ area, alongside the club’s clubhouse facilities. 

The project is another major milestone in the continued development of Avondale and reflects the ambition and hard work of those involved with the club.

Chairman Joe Plunkett thanked everyone who attended the official opening and spoke about the many volunteers who helped make the facility come to fruition. 

With too many to mention all, he did stress the massive influence Dave Madden had on securing the wonderful facility. Also he thanked Architect Lorenzo Cammoranesi.

The official opening was attended by a distinguished gathering of guests from the local community, footballing organisations, schools and public life. 

Among those present were An Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Deputy Lord Mayor of Cork Des Cahill, FAI President Paul Cooke, Ray Claffey FAI, local councillor Peter Horgan and Rev. Father Michael Keohane amongst others.

The club was also delighted to welcome coaches, parents, members and supporters, as well as trustees Michael Casey, Brendan McCarthy and Paddy Scannell.

Representatives from across the football community were also in attendance, including Sean O’Sullivan of the CYL, John Lyne of the MSL and Brendan O’Regan. 

Their presence highlighted the strong relationships that exist between Avondale and the wider football community throughout Cork.

The local education community was represented by school principals Fiona Meehan and AnnMarie O’Rourke, while Avondale and Ireland players Leah Callendar O’Leary and Holly O’Hagan were also in attendance, adding to what was already a memorable occasion.

A particular highlight of the day was a warm and heartfelt speech from An Taoiseach Micheál Martin, who spoke with great appreciation about the work being carried out at Avondale Football Club and the positive impact the club continues to have within the community.

“It’s great to see the tremendous work being done at the club,” said An Taoiseach. 

"It’s very impressive to see such tremendous growth in the women’s side of the club also. 

"The club should take a lot of credit in the importance of providing these opportunities for so many kids who have played with the club through generations, as they provided such excellent facilities so they could participate, develop and enjoy football. 

"Also I’d like to note three great men who once played for Avondale: Simon Zebo, Tom Cashman and Alan Kelly.”

The Taoiseach also spoke about the club’s ambitious plans for its new venture on the Carrigrohane Road and expressed his support for Avondale as it continues to look towards the future. 

His comments reflected the scale of the club’s ambitions and the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.

Micheál Martin also explained that he had a particular personal interest in attending the opening and showing his support for the club, due in large part to his brother Seán’s connection with Avondale and his work alongside Noel over the years.

He also spoke fondly of Beaumont Park itself, mentioning that it is an area where he regularly enjoys walking and saying that he is always delighted to see the park so busy and full of activity.

For everyone involved with Avondale, the opening was about much more than the building. 

The new facilities are a testament to the commitment, dedication and countless hours contributed by volunteers, trustees, coaches, parents, players and supporters who have helped the club progress.

They provide a superb new home for the many teams that represent Avondale and will help the club continue to grow at every level, from its youngest players through to its senior teams.

The day was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate that progress, while also looking ahead to what promises to be an exciting future for the club.

With new facilities now officially open and ambitious plans already in place for the next stage of development, Avondale FC can look forward with confidence.

Last Sunday was a day to celebrate the present, recognise the work of those who helped make the development possible, and look forward to the future.

Most importantly, it was a day that showcased what Avondale Football Club is all about — football, community, inclusion and creating opportunities for the next generation.
