Clinical Carrigtwohill junior footballers knock out Lisgoold

Carrigtwohill booked their place in the knockout stage of the Michael O'Connor Motor Factors JAFC after a gritty three-point win over Lisgoold, edging a thriller that twisted to the final whistle.
Leading by four at half-time, Carrig watched that cushion almost evaporate as Lisgoold clawed back to within a point midway through the second half, setting up a grandstand finish.
The tale was told in wides. Carrig were ice-cold clinical, failing to register a single wide in the opening half, while Lisgoold sprayed nine wides that would haunt them.
Daniel Murnane was superb for Carrig, nailing 0-6, while Matthew O'Sullivan dazzled for Lisgoold with 1-3.
The equation was simple: a draw or a win sent Carrig through while Lisgoold needed victory. Lisgoold flew out, O'Sullivan splitting the posts inside sixty seconds. Daniel McCarthy levelled for the only time.
Then controversy. Referee Peter O'Donovan marched a Carrig free forward 50 metres for Lisgoold not handing over the ball, Murnane converted.
Cian O'Riordan made it 0-3 to 0-1. Murnane then punished a three-up breach to which Cian Scannell replied. Murnane added a brace for 0-6 to 0-2 after 15 minutes.
Then the pivotal moment. O'Sullivan embarked on a dazzling solo run, hauled down inside the large square. Penalty awarded, Sean Ahern black-carded. John Cashman stepped up, only to rattle the post, a huge let-off.
Both sides then hit 0-2 each and it was 0-8 to 0-4 at the break. Not over yet by any means.
Brendan Twomey and Murnane fired two quick points after the restart. O'Sullivan responded and Twomey added another for 0-11 to 0-5.
Lisgoold roared back. Jacob Coleman and sub Dean Murphy pointed, O'Sullivan then smashed the green flag, suddenly 1-7 to 0-11, game on.
Carrig steadied with two priceless points, traded scores in injury time, and held firm for victory, though Midleton's win over Aghada saw Midleton leapfrog Carrig into that coveted semi-final.
