Midday Star of Mayfield wins the Garry O’Sullivan Memorial senior draghunt

A magnificent finish from Midday Star of Mayfield saw him win the Garry O’Sullivan Memorial Senior draghunt at Rylane.
In good open country the Andrew and Gary O’Callaghan trained hound showed all his resilience to cross the tape ahead of the Pat O’Mahony trained Hannah Bawn from Kerry Pike/Fair Hill harriers.
Championship leader Sean T of Griffin United ran another cracking draghunting to snatch third ticket and now looks odds on to regain his title.
The remaining ticketing hounds were Zodiac Jack, Starman’s Son and Applause.
For many years winning trainer Andrew O’Callaghan has trained some quality hounds and now in the twilight of his career in the sport his determination to win is still very evident.
“We are delighted to have won a draghunt remembering one of the true greats of the sport and it certainly has been a great fortnight for us after winning at the Donal O’Mahony meeting so long may our winning sequence continue,” said Andrew O’Callaghan.
The biggest cheer of the day was reserved for Kerry Pike/Fair Hill harriers trainer Danny McSweeney when his charge landed the spoils in the Senior maiden draghunt his first ever in the sport.
In a tremendous dash to the tape the winner saw off the strong challenge of Pixie’s Mexican Dream trained by Mary Barrett of Shanakiel harriers.
Mayfield trainer Denise Rall is having a good season with Magic’s Pride and he ran another cracking draghunt to fill third ticket ahead of Mexican Jet, Honeysuckle and So far so Good.
After taking all the plaudits from his fellow trainers and clubmen Danny McSweeney praised his hound for making it a day to remember.
“Dreams are made of an occasion like this one and I would like to thank my club and all the people who encouraged me to come into the sport and of course my hound Cruiser who knew that I wanted this day to happen sooner than later,” said Danny.
In the Puppy draghunt the recent form of the William Freyne and Ryan Duffy trained Putting on the Style continued as he produced a masterful finish to win the coveted draghunt.
Reports from the various vantage points suggested the hounds were driving the hunt at pace and when they showed on the finish the winner held off all comers on the race to the tape.
Shanakiel harriers dedicated trainer Mary Barrett had to be content with runner up slot with Charlotte’s Lass with the Kerry Pike/Fair Hill harriers O’Herlihy family pleased with Starlight who secured third ticket.
In the Puppy maiden draghunt there was joy for Jerry Murphy and Sheila Cummins as the Shanakiel harriers partnership saw their charge Naoi’s Boy see off clubmate Black Paddy and Wreck it Ralph.
The O’Sullivan family would like to thank the farming community at Rylane and all the clubs who supported this great meeting.
