Cork camogie team fundraising for holiday

The Cork camogie team and management are asking businesses and members of the public to help them in their fundraising efforts for a team holiday to celebrate their All-Ireland success.

After their recent All-Ireland final loss to Cork, Galway manager Cathal Murray spoke on the funds given to the men’s teams compared to the women’s sides.

Murray is not looking for the €150,000 grant, which is given to each of the four male All-Ireland senior finalists.

“I think the Camogie Association should be giving grants, I’m not going to go into how much money they’ve in the coffers or anything like that, but I think these players deserve it.

“Why should the male sports, the hurling and football, and okay, there’s big crowds of that, but we’re not looking for €150,000 to go out on holiday, but certainly €20,000, €25,000 per county would do so much, and it would mean we wouldn’t have to go and raise money just to go on holiday.”

The Galway manager’s comments were endorsed by his Cork counterpart Ger Manley.

But now Manley and his Cork side find themselves having to fundraise to try and go on a holiday.

To that end, they are running a competition where you can put your sports knowledge to the test.

They are running a ‘Predictor Competition’ and the first prize is €1,000, with plenty of other prizes to be won as well.

Manley said: “Have a bit of fun, test your knowledge and, most importantly, help support the team’s fundraising efforts. Enter now and play your part in giving the girls a holiday to remember.”

The entry fee is €20, and you will be predicting the winners of various GAA competitions in the coming weeks.

For one of the prizes, you can nominate a camogie club of your choice to receive a training session with two members of the Cork camogie team.

Meanwhile, the quarter-finals of the SE Systems Cork senior club camogie championship take place tomorrow.

Defending champions, St Finbarr’s, will take on Ballincollig at Ovens, and the Togher side will be favourites to win.

With the likes of Sorcha McCartan, Liz O’Donovan, Aisling Shannon, and Gemma O’Connor in their side, they have plenty of talented players to see them come through what will be a tough tie.

Clodagh Finn, Leah Hannigan, Sorcha McCarthy, and Blaithin Cunniffe will try to upset the odds for Ballincollig.

Meanwhile, Aghabullogue take on Blackrock, a side that have been improving game by game.

The Rockies will look to Hayley Ryan and Cliona O’Callaghan to lead their attack and keep their winning run going.

Aghabullogue will be favourites and will be hoping Cliona Healy, Ciara McCarthy, Lexi Manley, Anna Foley, and Meabh Ring can help see them through.

The tie of the round is probably the meeting of Courcey Rovers and St Catherine’s at Castle Road.

Courcey Rovers have been in top form all the way through, with Fiona Keating, Linda Collins, and Saoirse McCarthy leading their attack.

Catherine’s recovered from a poor start to reach this stage, led by Laura Hayes, Meabh Fitzgerald, Ally Mulkerrins, Eimear O’Brien, and Orla Cotter.

Sarsfields face Cloughduv, with the latter another team that have impressed. Niamh McNabola has been outstanding for Cloughduv and will need to put in another top performance to beat Sars.

The East Cork side started slowly but are building momentum now, led by the likes of Orlaith Mullins, Rachel Roche, Kate Fennessy, and Lucy Allen.
