Ringmahon Rangers senior women's team end their first year in existence with silverware and promotion

Colin Gurhy, Head of Women’s Football at Ringmahon Rangers, has described the club’s first senior women’s season as a remarkable journey built on belief, hard work and strong support.

“It only seems like yesterday when chairman Paul Higgins asked me to become Head of Women’s Football,” said Gurhy. 

“From my first meeting with Paul and the committee, they fully backed the vision for developing schoolgirls’ and women’s football at Ringmahon Rangers.” 

That support allowed Gurhy to build a strong senior coaching team. 

Liam Henry became head coach, with Michael Collins and Maria White joining the management group.

“Liam and Michael have brought huge experience, having both coached at a high level, including League of Ireland football. 

"I had coached alongside them previously and knew the standards and knowledge they could bring. 

"Together with Maria, they have created a strong, welcoming and football-focused environment where players feel comfortable, enjoy their football and are constantly encouraged to develop. 

"Maria has also been a vital link between the senior team and the talented young players already at the club.” 

The achievement is even more impressive considering the team did not exist just eight months ago. 

A squad of 24 players, many of whom had never played together, was brought together and quickly developed into a united and competitive group.

That work was rewarded with victory in the Kevin Barry Cup and promotion to the Premier Division in the team’s very first season.

The squad combines experienced players, including former League of Ireland players, with an exciting group of younger talent. 

With an average age of just 20, Gurhy believes there is huge potential for further development.

“We will strengthen the squad ahead of next season, but the foundations are very strong. 

"We are really looking forward to testing ourselves in the Premier Division.” 

Gurhy also praised those behind the scenes.

“None of this would have been possible without our coaching staff, the 100% backing of the Ringmahon Rangers committee and the support of our sponsors, Ray O’Mahony of the Red Cove Inn and Kearney’s Coaches.” 

For Ringmahon Rangers’ first-ever Senior Women’s Team, this season has created history — and it may only be the beginning.
