PIHC: Youth and experience driving Valley Rovers on

Valley Rovers head to Ballinaspittle on Sunday already assured of their place in the knockout stages of the Co-Op SuperStores PIHC, but there is still plenty to play for in this Group 3 Round 3 meeting with neighbours Ballymartle. 

Qualification may be secured ahead of the 2pm start, yet momentum, sharpness, and the steady building of confidence remain central to Valley’s approach. 

They look like a team coming good at the right time, driven by a strong blend of youth and experience that has begun to knit together impressively.

Their two-point win over Kilworth last time out was the clearest expression yet of that balance. The younger players brought pace, aggression, and a willingness to take on shots, the older heads supplied structure, calmness, and the game management needed to close out a tight contest.

The scoring spread told its own story. Chris O’Leary led the way with 0-8, while youngster Joe Twohig added 0-3. 

Eoin Guinane, Jack Walsh, and Shane Ryan were all influential and also found the target.

What stood out most was how they handled the final quarter. Kilworth pushed hard, but Valley Rovers didn’t buckle. It was composed, controlled hurling, the type that hints at a group growing in belief under coach Eoin Galvin from Ballincollig.

Defensively, they were solid. Ted McGrath, Mark O’Leary, and Cian Johnson anchored a back line that stayed disciplined, while Matthew Woods worked tirelessly around the middle.

Sunday’s clash carries a very different weight for Ballymartle. They are walking a tightrope, nothing less than a win will do, and even that won’t be enough on its own to qualify. 

Ballymartle must take care of their business against Valley Rovers and hope Carrigaline do them a favour by beating Kilworth. Scoring difference then comes into play.

For Valley Rovers, though, this is about maintaining the upward curve that has defined their opening rounds as they aim to book a direct route to the last four.

They look like a team settling into themselves and this weekend provides another chance to show that mix is becoming their defining strength as they look to improve on last year’s quarter-final defeat to Cloyne.
