Cork professional boxer Tommy “The Governor“ Hyde is returning to the ring to fight American southpaw Vaughn Williams at Santa Monica Pier California in Los Angeles on Saturday night.
Tommy will be looking to go 16-0, especially after his last two fights where he headlined his father’s NOWHERE2HYDE cards in the GUC Parochial Arena.
In those bouts, Hyde stoped Mexican Paul Valenzuela last November with a second round knockout and then went 15-0 on April 18th when he stopped English fighter Mick Hall early in the third round stoppage in front of his loyal supporters.
Hyde’s opponent is American native Vaughn Williams and he is coming into this bout with 13-2 record after he beat Luis Espinal by unanimous decision in his last fight.
However, this is a big step up for the American southpaw, as this will be his first eight round fight, while Hyde is already is after fighting at that distance and was scheduled to fight ten rounds in his last two fights but got his opponent’s out of the ring early doors.
Another big plus for the Cork man is that his is working with a great trainer in Lee Beard and the last time I saw him fight in Cork his progress was very clear to see, as he was very mobile by working behind excellent footwork.
“I’m fighting on this Saturday on the Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles,” Tommy said.
“It’s a massive opportunity for me to fight in such an iconic place and show the California crowd what I’m all about.
“I used to be based in Los Angeles a few years ago, so I have been to a good few boxing shows there over the years.
“It’s a city full of boxing history and champions, so I’m really excited for this one.
"I’ve been training hard in Manchester for weeks with my trainer Lee Beard and we’re just coming to the end of training camp, with just a couple of hard sessions and spars with southpaw Marvin Tomilson, who fought on DAZN two weeks ago in Leeds.
“I’ll be fighting American Vaughn Williams, he’s a southpaw with a record of 13-2, so he’s a good fighter who I think this will bring out the best in me.
“I travelled over to Los Angeles two weeks ago to finish off my preparations with early 5am runs for this fight and acclimatise to the time difference and now all I want to put on another good performance to further my career,” Hyde added.
In other Cork professional boxing news, Christina Desmond will fight Louise Creaven for the BUI Super Lightweight title and Cathal Crowley, Aaron O’Donoghue and Kuba Pielesz will also feature on the Siam Warriors Pro Boxing Event at the GCU Parochial Arena on October 9th.
