148 Cork athletes represent Munster at the 2026 Special Olympics Ireland Summer Games

Cork athletes made their mark at the recent Special Olympics Ireland Games where a remarkable 148 athletes proudly represented Cork as part of Team Munster at the 2026 Special Olympics Ireland Summer Games. 

They returned home with medals, memories and lifelong friendships after four unforgettable days of competition and celebration.

The Cork contingent, which included 50 coach chaperones and golf partners, along with nine head coaches, departed Kent and Mallow railway stations, embarking on a journey that would see them compete against the best Special Olympics athletes from across the country.

The Games officially got underway with a spectacular Opening Ceremony at Tallaght Stadium, where athletes from every corner of Ireland were welcomed in front of a packed crowd. 

Cork athletes Nathan Sheehan, Mallow Marlins, and Maeve O’Leary, from Muskerry Special Olympics Club, were proud to be the Team Munster flag and torch bearers at the ceremony. 

The ceremony concluded with vibrant musical and dance performances that had athletes, coaches, volunteers, and supporters on their feet, setting the tone for an incredible weekend.

From Friday through to Sunday, competition was in full swing across 13 sports, with Cork athletes competing in athletics, badminton, basketball, bocce, bowling, football, golf, artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, kayaking, the Motor Activities Training Programme (MATP), swimming, and table tennis.

One of the highlights of this year's Games was the introduction of the Motor Activities Training Programme as an event for the first time. 

The programme provides athletes with profound intellectual disabilities and high support needs the opportunity to develop movement and motor skills in an inclusive sporting environment. 

Cork was proudly represented in MATP by athletes from St Paul's Special School and Horizons, whose participation marked an important milestone for both the Games and the county. Their enthusiasm and determination embodied the very essence of the Special Olympics spirit.

Across every venue, Cork athletes produced outstanding performances, demonstrating months of dedication and training. 

They achieved success across numerous sports, bringing home an impressive collection of medals and ribbons while displaying exceptional teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship. However, as every athlete and coach knows, the Special Olympics Ireland Summer Games are about far more than podium finishes.

The Games celebrate friendship, confidence, personal achievement, and inclusion. 

Behind every athlete stood a committed team of coaches, volunteers, chaperones, golf partners, and family members whose encouragement and support made each success possible. 

Their dedication ensured the Cork delegation enjoyed an unforgettable Games experience both on and off the field of play.

Following four action-packed days, Team Munster returned home by train and were greeted with immense pride by families and supporters. 

The medals and ribbons will undoubtedly be treasured, but the confidence gained, the friendships formed and the joy experienced throughout the Summer Games will remain long after the final events concluded.

For Cork's athletes, coaches and supporters, the 2026 Special Olympics Ireland Summer Games will be remembered as a celebration of ability and the extraordinary power of sport to bring people together.

As Cork's Special Olympics clubs take a well-earned summer break, preparations are already underway for the new training season, with clubs across the county set to return in September.

New volunteers are always welcome, whether as coaches, assistant coaches or club volunteers and no previous experience is necessary as training and support are provided.
