Cork Draghunting: Joe, Gary and Nicole Freyne with Not Now Al of Clogheen Harriers, winner of the Senior International at Aghabullogue.

Championship leader Not Now Al of Clogheen showed all his class to win the Senior International Draghunt at Aghabullogue on Saturday.

In wonderful open terrain the Gary, Joe and Nicole trained hound showed true grit on the finish to see off last year’s winner Knockane Jack from the kennel of Ger and Jennifer Kenneally in partnership with Ian Freyne.

James and Joy Greene decided they needed a break in Tenerife, but their hound Starman’s Son was in good hands with Susan Walsh and ran a cracking draghunt to snatch third ticket.

In the Senior Maiden Draghunt, the Barry O’Keeffe Shanakiel harriers trained Border Mystery produced a season best to see off clubmate Travel Star trained by Thomas Canniffe.

In another true run draghunt the Jerry Murphy-trained Mexican Jet completed a Shanakiel Harriers 1, 2, 3.

In the Puppy draghunt the large attendance were treated to a cracking finish with the honours going to the Kyle and Calum McCarthy Mayfield-trained Mossy’s Diamond.

On quality terrain the hounds relished the running and reports from all vantage points suggested they were moving at pace.

When the hounds came into view the winner looked to be heading the pack and on the race to the tape he held all comers with a quality turn of foot.

In the end the winner crossed the tape ahead Blue Lilly, trained by the husband-and-wife team of Ken and Trina Long of Southern/Carrigaline Harriers.

The Fair Hill training kennel of Tristan O’Herhily are having a great season and they will have been thrilled with the performance of Starlight who ran a courageous race to snatch third ticket.

The remaining tickets went to championship leader Putting on the Style who had to be content with fourth ticket with Handsome Jack and Charlotte’s Lass concluding the ticketing hounds.

In the Puppy Maiden draghunt the closest finish of the day was witnessed with the Tristan O’Herlihy-trained Fireball of Kerry Pike/Fair Hill harriers getting the decision.

A blanket could have been thrown over the first few hounds with the strongly fancied One day at a Time of Clogheen taking second place ahead of clubmate Slievemish Queen trained by Damien Wade.

Gypsy Rock, Black Paddy and Naoi’s Boy concluded the ticketing hounds.

The Cork City and County Harriers Association thanked Tim Dennehy for his help in organising this major meeting and also to the Aghabullogue Hunt Club.

Pat Dennehy gave the use of his land for the start and finish and there was great hospitality shown by Cremin’s Bar for the presentation of prizes.
