There is a renewed sense of pride and anticipation in Blarney tonight as the club prepare to mark a significant milestone: the first home game of its newly reformed women’s team in over two decades.

Tonight’s clash with Park United at O’Shea Park is more than just a fixture—it is the culmination of years of planning, development, and belief.

For manager John White, the occasion represents the fulfilment of a long-held ambition.

Speaking ahead of the match, he outlined the journey that has brought the club to this point.

“Having a women’s team has been a long-term goal since we started the Girls Academy 14 years ago,” said John.

"And even more so when we had teams playing in the Schoolgirls League. The numbers and the interest was always there.”

That foundation has proven vital. Over the years, Blarney has consistently fielded teams across various age groups in the CWSSL, building a strong pipeline of talent.

Crucially, many players have remained committed as they progressed through the ranks.

According to White, the loyalty and perseverance of those players made the decision to establish a senior side inevitable.

“The fact that our U17 and U19 squads stayed together really reinforced it.

"Their commitment and dedication has been fantastic. While this is a new chapter, it also reconnects the club with its past.

"Blarney previously fielded a women’s team between the mid-1990s and 2000, and there is a tangible link between then and now.

"Paul Fitton, who coached during that earlier era, is once again involved as part of the current setup—an embodiment of continuity and community.”

The excitement around the squad is unmistakable. White describes “a real buzz” throughout the club, with players, coaches, and supporters embracing the return of senior women’s football.

That support, he says, has always been unwavering.

“Our President Henry Murphy and every committee we’ve had have always backed girls’ football fully.

"We’re regarded as an integral part of the club. It’s given the whole club a boost and shows what can be achieved through commitment.”

What makes this team particularly special is its homegrown identity.

Nearly every player has progressed through Blarney’s academy or underage system. In fact, 23 of the 24 players in the current squad have worn the club’s colours at youth level.

Many of them were part of a symbolic return match eight years ago—a nine-a-side game against Carrigaline—which marked the first step toward rebuilding the women’s side.

Five of those players—Grace Murphy, Ellie Smith, Emma White, Jane Russell, and Olivia Forrest—are now key members of the senior squad.

The sense of continuity extends beyond the pitch.

Several senior players now coach within the Girls Academy, creating a visible pathway for younger players and strengthening the club’s culture.

“It’s a huge boost for the younger girls. They now have local role models.

"They can see exactly what’s possible.”

That pathway is already making an impact. Younger players are increasingly eager to progress, with some under-15s already asking about training with the senior team.

In a sporting landscape where female participation often drops during teenage years, Blarney’s structure offers a compelling solution.

“Now there’s something to aim for. They can aspire to play under the lights on the big pitch. That’s so important.”

On the field, the team is still finding its feet.

Their opening match against Passage provided valuable lessons, despite the challenges of travel delays and a more experienced opponent, White was encouraged by the performance, highlighting the team’s discipline and determination.

Looking ahead, expectations remain grounded but optimistic.

“We want good performances, to play to our potential, and to improve with every game. We’re laying the foundations for the future.

Tonight’s opponents, Park United, offer a familiar test. The clubs have shared competitive encounters at underage levels over the years, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the fixture.

For Blarney, however, the result is only part of the story.

This is about more than points—it is about identity, progress, and community.

The squad, drawn from Blarney and surrounding areas such as Tower, Donoughmore, Grenagh, and Ballincollig, reflects the strength of local football and the power of long-term investment in youth development.

Backed by an experienced coaching team—including Eamonn Murphy, Paul Fitton, and Denise King—the players are stepping into a new challenge together, united by shared history and ambition.

“As the lights come on at O’Shea Park, the significance of the moment will not be lost on anyone involved.

"After more than 20 years, Blarney’s women are back on home soil—and they are here to stay.”
