Cork Draghunting: High Miss of Griffin United off to a flying start at Glenville

High Miss winner of the Clogheen Harriers Senior Draghunt at Glenville.

Reigning Senior All-Ireland champion High Miss of Griffin United, continued where she finished last October when winning the opening Senior Draghunt of the 2026 season at Glenville on Sunday.

The one guarantee you get from the Clogheen club is good open clean terrain for all hounds and reports from all vantage points suggested the hounds were travelling at pace.

When the hounds showed on the finish the winner led the pack and in the style of a quality hound, she crossed the tape a comfortable winner.

Northern Hunt trainer John O’Callaghan certainly brought heavy artillery to the venue as he filled the next four tickets with Ashcroft, Adonis, Authentic and Applause and Sean T of Griffin United filled the final sixth ticket.

Speaking after the draghunt the winning trainer Donal O’Donovan praised his talented hound.

“Always nice to win and we are thrilled she is showing great form so early in the season,” said Donal.

In the Senior maiden draghunt Southern/Carrigaline harriers charge Casey Jack showed her class to win her first ever draghunt crossing the tape ahead of the James Greene trained Starman of Kerry Pike/Fair Hill harriers.

In another good finish the Barry O’Keeffe Shanakiel harriers trained Border Tom filled third ticket.

The winning trainers Ger and Jennifer Kenneally were naturally elated to see their hound produce her best every run in her first Senior draghunt.

“Casey Jack has always been consistent but to see her win in that style was something else,” said Ger Kenneally.

The action started at the same venue on Saturday with the opening Puppy meeting of the season.

A lot of work goes into rearing and setting pups off before the big slip and what a day it prove for Mayfield brothers Kyle and Callum McCarthy when their charge Mossy’s Diamond landed the honours.

Reports from this excellent course suggested the young hounds were travelling at pace and when they showed on the finish, they were a few in with a chance of landing the spoils.

In the style of a good hound the winner finished well to run out a seven- length winner from Wolfe Tone Lilly trained by Martin Wall of Northern Hunt.

Trina and Ken Long of Southern/Carrigaline harriers will be pleased with the performance of Blue Lilly who ran a cracking race to snatch third ticket.

Speaking after the draghunt the winning trainer Kyle McCarthy praised his young hound for his battling performance.

“We are delighted as you don’t know what to expect in the first draghunt of the season and hopefully we can experience another few of them throughout the season,” said Kyle.

The Clogheen club would like to convey their thanks to landowner Shane Murphy and his family for their great cooperation and also to the all the farmers in the Glenville community for their continued support.

Next weekend the Sonny Cummins memorial meeting will take place at Ballineen with the Puppy slip on Saturday at 2pm with the same venue hosting the Senior meeting on Sunday with a 3pm slip.
