Clonakilty got their second win in McCarthy Insurance Division 1 football league after their win at Douglas on Sunday morning.

The wind played its part in this decider as evident by the home side kicking four two-pointers in the first half to lead by four at the break.

But the crucial score also came in that half when Conor Daly found the back of the net for the visitors, a telling score in the end.

The game was close all through and could have gone either way right to the end and few would have argued had it ended all square.

Douglas were much improved since their opening day showing against Nemo and made Clon fight all the way. But the West Cork side got telling scores at crucial times and along with Daly’s goal, late points from Dan Peet and Des Kenneally help them to pick up the points.

Despite playing against the wind, Clon had the first real chance when Sean White played Kenneally in, but his effort on goal was well saved by Andrew Cotter.

Alan O’Hare put Douglas in front with the game’s opening point as Dara Ó Se got Clon off the mark to equalise. Louis Dwan Fogarty hit the bar for Douglas before he got their first two-pointer, to make it 0-3 to 0-1 after nine minutes.

But straight from the restart Clon worked the ball down the pitch for Daly to get the game’s only goal. He added a point and Tomás Clancy also scored to see the visitors lead by 1-3 to 0-3.

Jack Cunningham, Niall Hartnett and Dylan Ward all pointed for Douglas to put them back on level terms.

Ó Se put Clon back in front before Ward got Douglas’ second two-pointer, to make it 0-8 to 1-4 with 24 minutes gone.

Adam Cantwell got the home side’s third two-pointer to stretch their lead, with Ó Se replying at the other end.

Just before half time O’Hare got his side’s fourth two-pointer, to see Douglas lead by 0-12 to 1-5 at the break.

Clancy and Cunningham exchanged points early in the second half before Daly hit the bar when he looked like scoring Clon’s second goal.

Ó Se pointed a free, with Daly also scoring, to make it 1-8 to 0-13 after 40 minutes.

Ward increased the home side’s lead, before a two-pointer from Clancy narrowed the gap. Ó Se scored after 46 minutes to level it, 1-11 to 0-14.

Cunningham put Douglas back in front with Ó Se replying to see them level again.

A free from Cotter from distance and against the wind put Douglas back in front, but again Clon responded with Kenneally on target to make it 1-13 to 0-16.

Sean O’Leary, not long on as a sub for Douglas, put them back in front but this proved to be their last score.

Late points from Peet and Kenneally secured the win for the visitors after an entertaining game.
