Former Kerry star Gavin Crowley is set to be appointed coach of Castletownbere bringing an end to a protracted search since Ian Murphy's departure last September, The Echo understands.
The Beara outfit opened their McCarthy Insurance Group Division 2 Football League campaign last Sunday when they lost away to Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh on a scoreline of 3-11 to 1-12.
Andrew O’Sullivan and Lorcan Harrington took interim charge of the side in a game where there were a lot of positives from a Castletownbere point of view.
The average age of the starting team was 21.5.

Forward Fintan Fenner was the best player on the pitch as he scored 1-6 (2 2pt) over the course of the hour. They face St Michael’s at home on Sunday with throw-in at 11.30am, but it’s understood that Crowley will take up his new position next week.
Crowley, a Templenoe man and experienced inter-county defender, stepped away from the Kerry panel after the 2023 National League at the age of 29, having been a regular presence in the squad for several seasons, winning an All-Ireland medal in 2022.
His high-level playing pedigree including All-Ireland final appearances will no doubt help him in this new position.
His leadership credentials and tactical grounding were widely recognised during his Kerry career.
This though represents his first major coaching role.
For Castletownbere, the move signals both ambition and a desire for fresh direction. The club has gone through a challenging few years, but with plenty of young talented players, there’s hope that the club can move in the right direction again.

His defensive expertise should particularly benefit a side that conceded heavily at key moments last year including their last group game defeat to Kiskeam in the McCarthy Insurance Group PIFC.
That 4-13 to 1-14 loss denied Castletownbere’s passage into the knockout stages.
Crowley’s exposure to elite preparation standards with Kerry is likely to influence training structures and player development pathways within the club.
Castletownbere will face Macroom, Kiskeam and Aghada in their McCarthy Insurance Group PIFC group stage later this year.
