Douglas defence leads the way again in PSFC play-only concession stats

After breaking down the Cork PSFC scoring rates from play yesterday, it’s time to flip the field and look at the other end, what each side averaged in concessions from play across the championship season.
The focus here is points conceded per game (PCPG) from play only – no 45s, frees, two-point frees, marks, or sidelines. Just the raw defensive returns.
And like with the overall concession rate, there’s one team that stick out above the rest from play, southsiders Douglas posted an average of just 8.0 PCPG across their three games, an impressive return particularly given their group stage elimination. Again, it highlights where there primary issue lies, and it’s not in defence.
The first reshuffling of the pack lies with Nemo Rangers, who had the best concession rate of any team that reached the knockout stages this year, just 10.5 PCPG. Trailing just behind are St Finbarr’s, who, despite playing the most games of anyone, only conceded 0-20 from placed balls.

Fourth place is taken by Newcestown, meaning it’s the same top four as the overall best defensive averages, just reshuffled. The Carbery outfits concession rate averaged 11.5 per game, and that factors in their two extra-time outings.
Clonakilty are fifth, having conceded just 0-8 from placed balls across three games, the lowest of anyone in the grade. Their PCPG came in at 12.0 from play. Though from fifth to 11, there is an average difference of just one point from play.
Surprisingly high at sixth are Carbery Rangers, the relegated side posting a 12.2 concession rate that leaves them firmly mid-table, though their offensive struggles were the most prominent issue.
Mallow sit marginally behind with 12.3 PCPG from play, just 0-16 of their scores against from placed balls, while Ballincollig are only a touch further back with 12.6 PCPG from play. Castlehaven are ninth, last year’s champions conceding 12.8 a game from play. Tenth and 11 are separated by only 0.1 PCPG, Carrigaline posted 12.9, and conceded more from placed balls than any other team in the grade with 0-23.

St Michael’s averaged 13.0 PCPG from play across their three games, but as in the overall concession rankings, Valley Ravers stand a good bit further back from the rest.
Their placed ball concessions totalled 0-22 across five games, but they conceded a total of 7-80 overall, leaving them with a rate of 15.8 PCPG.
