Gaelcholáiste Mhuire An Mhainistir Thuaidh’s hopes of progress in the TUS Dr Harty Cup were dashed as Our Lady’s Secondary School came with a late surge at Fethard Town Park on Wednesday.
The northside school, semi-finalists last year, would have progressed with a draw were in a good position when a free from Craig Ó Súilleabháin in the 56th minute put them 1-15 to 1-13 ahead, having trailed by seven at one stage when playing against the wind in the first half.
However, they would not score again and Templemore found an extra gear. Jack Bevans, unerring from placed balls throughout, halved the deficit before Philip O’Dwyer levelled and then, as the clock neared 60, good work from Padraic O’Shea drew a foul and Bevans sent over his tenth point of the day.
After a Gaelcholáiste Mhuire equalising attempt fell wide, they lost Trevor Ó Bruadau to a red card for an off-the-ball incident and a scuffle ensued. When normality resumed, Templemore centre-back Shay Gleeson - superb throughout - sent a free deep into North Mon territory and Cian Broderick latched on to the break before firing over.
One last Mon attack failed to yield the goal they now needed and the final whistle followed - there was a slight chance of salvation if St Joseph’s of Tulla had lost to Christian Brothers College but that result sealed their fate, meaning just one Cork school, Midleton CBS, will be in the quarter-final draw.
Despite having the breeze in their faces in the opening half, ‘the AG’ began well, with a pair of Gabhán Ó Ceallacháin points putting them 0-4 to 0-1 ahead but Templemore responded strongly. Bevans’ frees and an outrageous Dan Coffey shot from the right corner helped them to move 0-6 to 0-4 in front before a turnover led to Coffey and the industrious James Ryan setting up Seán Walsh for a well-taken goal.

Further points followed from Ryan and Broderick to put them 1-8 to 0-4 in front but Gaelcholáiste Mhuire managed to halt the flow and Craig Ó Súilleabháin was to the fore as they finished the half well. A 65 from Ó Ceallacháin, after Lucas Ó Muirthile had gone close to a goal, sent them in trailing by 1-9 to 0-7.
Within three minutes of the restart, they were level: Ó Súilleabháin scored a free and then set up Ó Muirthile for a goal before Josh Ó Brosnacháin levelled. However, the concession of cheap frees cost them as Bevans pushed Templemore three ahead again.
Gaelcholáiste Mhuire improved at the back, though, with Dónal Ó Scannláin playing the sweeper role well, and Ó Ceallacháin’s long-range dead balls drew them level. They were in front thanks to an excellent Callum Ó Cofaigh point and then Ó Súilleabháin gave them breathing space - but it was to be Templemore’s day.
