Cork professional boxer Christina Desmond moved to two and zero in the professional ranks when she beat the tough Argentinan fighter Naila Abigail Poloso in a Conlan Sports and Hammer Promotion event at the Devenish Complex in Belfast last Saturday night.

This was Desmond’s second fight in the space of four weeks and the welterweight came through it with flying colours, winning by unanimous decision 60-54.

It’s a true testament of Desmond’s determination and ability to fight professionally twice in the space of four weeks.

She stopped Polish fighter Joanna Fraszczak in the second round of her debut fight at the JD Promotion event at the National Arena on October 11th and then was back in action last Saturday night.

However, this fight with Poloso was a totally different affair as the Argentinian gave as good as she got in the first two rounds.

Desmond then applied pressure on her opponent early in the third round with some beautiful combinations to Poloso's head and body that certainly caught the eye of the judges.

The Cork southpaw continued to fight behind her right jab in the fourth round and stunned Poloso with a powerful left to the head, however, the Argentinian kept putting her head down so Desmond couldn’t land clear shots to her face.

During the final two rounds Desmond showed all her boxing skills to ease her way to her second professional victory, but Poloso proved to be a tough and tricky competitor and going a full six rounds this early in her professional career was a totally different experience for Desmond.

Christina was delighted with her performance and was also grateful for all her support that traveled from Cork.

She was especially thrilled that her good friend and Irish boxing hero Kelly Harrington who was sitting at ringside again in Belfast.

“To be honest, I loved every minute of this fight as it was totally a different fight from my first fight in Dublin,” Christina said.

“The girl I was fighting tonight, Poloso was a very game and different opponent, however, I was very happy with my performance and going six full rounds this early in my professional career will definitely stand to me.

“I was also happy to get back out so quickly after my first fight in Dublin and I was the thank Conlon Sports and Hammer Promotions for letting me fight on this card.

“The atmosphere was electric when I walked into the ring which surprised me, especially as I was the second fight on the card.

“Again, I also what to thank my family and supporters who traveled from Cork to support me, however, a special shoutout to my great friend Kelly Harrington, who was at ringside again, jumping and cheering my every punch.

“I wasn’t really tired after the fight especially as it was the very first time I fought six rounds compared to three rounds in my amateur days.

"My trainer Tom Power had me ready for every different scenario for my fight and had me sparring eight rounds in the buildup, so I knew I was very well prepared.

“To be honest, I would like to fight again before Christmas and if there are any promoters looking for a female fight on their card, they can reach out to me, otherwise I plan to be back out in February,” Desmond added.
