Charleville 0-15 (0-2-11) Ballygarvan 0-11 (0-2-7)

An upset in the JAFC quarter-final tie at Glenville with Charleville advancing after a hard-fought win over Ballygarvan.

Both sides had their moments but Ballygarvan were 0-10 to 0-8 up following a point by Cork footballer Sean Brady, who came off the bench as he recovers from injury, entering the last quarter.

Avondhu champions Charleville took over from there, outscoring the Carrigdhound side 0-7 to 0-1, including an effort from Darragh Fitzgibbon who collected his third hurling All-Star the night before.

A key moment came after 55 minutes after Charleville moved 0-12 to 0-11 up. Brady cut through in search of a goal for Ballygarvan but he was denied by Jesse Smith from close range, conceding a 45 which clipped the upright and was cleared.

Great points by Robert Carroll (2) and Fitzgibbon, after good play by James O'Brien, set up a county semi-final meeting with Kilmacabea.

Charleville dominated the opening 12 minutes but were unable to get on the scoresheet before Ballygarvan opened with an Evan O'Connor point.

The South East side hit a purple patch, Niall Dowd pointing before Smith saved well from Evan O'Connor. Dowd set up Dylan O'Connor for a fine two-pointer. Then Dowd and Piaras O'Halloran combined for a two-point free that Dowd converted to make it 0-6 to 0-0.

In the 13th minute, Jack Callaghan opened the Charleville account with a two-point free followed by a Darren Casey white flag. A foul on Darren Butler led to another two-point free by Jack Callaghan.

Patient build-up by Oran O'Connell, Jack Meade, Casey and Buckley led to a foul and Callaghan levelling at 0-6 each.

Ballygarvan introduced the returning Brady early in the second half but Charleville hit the front when Conor Buckley set up Jack Buckley.

Dowd levelled after good play by Brady, 0-8 each, and an Evan O'Connor free followed by a Brady score pushed Ballygarvan two ahead.

That was before Charleville's better balance told in those final 10 minutes.
