UCC Glanmire Catalyst advanced in the Domino’s Women’s National Cup when they beat Catalyst Fr Mathews in front of a large attendance at the Fr Mathew’s Arena.
Mathew’s came into this game without one of their American players as Lexie Givens had to return home for a family bereavement. Underdogs beforehand, it meant this was always going to be an uphill battle for Jamie Barry’s side to get their first victory of the season.
Glanmire led by 18 points at the half, but to be honest, they really didn’t have to move out of second gear as they were dominant all over the floor to see them safely into the next round of the competition.

The visitors raced into an 11-5 lead with baskets by Clare O’Sullivan, American Viane Cummer and her counterpart Jewel Watkins to force Mathew’s into an early timeout after four minutes of the game. Grainne Dywer reduced the deficit for the home side 13-9 with a long-range effort beyond the arc.
However, buckets by Cumber and a wonderful entry pass by Annaliese Murphy to Miriam Loughrey to score for Glanmire to lead 21-10 at the end of the period.
O’Sullivan increased Glanmire’s lead with her eighth point of the game 25-12 with an offensive rebound and a put-back and a baseline jumper. However, Laila Blair brought her personal tally to 10 for Mathew’s to trail 28-17 after four minutes of the second quarter.
Another big aspect of the game was that Mathew’s were too dependent on scoring from Blaire and Dywer. They combined for 21 points out of 22 in 17 minutes of basketball.
Coach Barry needs to find a secondary Irish scorer if they are to compete and win games for the rest of the league. Cumber and O’Sullivan nailed efforts outside the arc and a powerful drive to the hoop by Watkins gave Glanmire a 41-23 lead at the half.
In the second half, Glanmire coach Mark Scannell was able to rotate his entire squad with good effect which will stand to them going forward.

As for Mathew’s they have a star in Blair and Dywer is still very effective, but although they finished the game strongly, Glanmire we’re never in any trouble.
