Ireland’s Chiedozie Ogbene has joined Sheffield United

Cork's Chiedozie Ogbene completed a deadline day season long loan move to Sheffield United from Ipswich Town on Monday night.

Adam Idah also completed his transfer deadline day move to Swansea.

Swansea announced the signing of the Irish striker for a “significant undisclosed fee” which is reported to be about £6million, about two-thirds of the sum Celtic paid Norwich last summer.

Ogbene moves across the EFL Championship to a side fighting at the bottom of the table with no points on the board.

Ogbene joins Sheffield United after a turbulent year that involved a prolonged comeback from an Achilles injury up during a Premier League game with Brentford.

The winger is now 'excited' to get going at Bramall Lane after starting the season with Ipswich Town.

"I'm very happy and excited. It is an honour to be at a great club," he told the Sheffield United's media team.

"I've lived here for four years, so I like to think I know what this club means to the people and the city. It is a huge honour to be here.

"I have a feeling about what Sheffield United means to the people, so to be part of it now and to be immersed into this club which has over 130 years of incredible history, and has a passionate fanbase, it is something I want to be part of.

"It is almost like my second home in England and given the stature it was one I had to take. It is an opportunity you don't pass up on."

The deal comes just as Ogbene returns to the Republic of Ireland senior men's national team for a double header of World Cup qualifiers with Hungary and Armenia.

Ogbene is now back wearing green following a prolonged comeback from injury after his return to the Premier League last year with Ipswich Town.

The winger's last full season was with Luton during the 2023-24 campaign.

The high point for Ogbene was at Anfield when he scored to give his side the lead against a title-chasing Liverpool side.

That was one of many moments during a memorable season for the winger, who started out with Tramore Athletic in the Cork Schoolboys League.

Ogbene’s breakthrough season in England was in 2021-22 as he helped Rotherham United win promotion to League One and the EFL Trophy by defeating Sutton United at Wembley Stadium.

The winger actually scored in the final and that gave his side a 3-2 lead midway through the first half of extra-time.

Ogbene used his performances with Rotherham United to get into the Ireland senior team under Stephen Kenny.

The winger went on to win 'Men's Player of the Year' in 2024 following a campaign that took in his contributions during the tail end of Euro qualifying through games with the Netherlands, France, and Greece.

Ogbene is now out to rebuild and restart with Sheffield United after a long-comeback from injury with Ipswich Town.
