Under the same ranking system as the hurling equivalent plus a few tweaks, the football table shows the gap between the big three and the rest

Having looked at the Cork hurling championships last week, with a points system to determine which clubs have performed best under the new championship format – we’ve run the numbers again, for football.

The rules are tweaked this time. Five points still for a semi-final, eight for a final, 12 for a county title. But three are awarded for a beaten quarter-finalist. Premier Senior carries full value, Senior A is now worth 75%, Premier Intermediate now 60%, Intermediate A now 50% and Premier Junior now 40%. The higher the grade, the greater the reward.

The spread tells us what we all already know. The ‘big three’ tag never so prominent, towering over the rest. Nemo Rangers (44.5) sit atop, not just for their two PSFC titles, but for their consistency in reaching the decider two of the other three seasons, while a strong second team at Premier Intermediate pushes them clear of Castlehaven.

The Haven sit on 42 points and boast the best run of five years from the big three, no less than a semi-final appearance in every season under the new format. St Finbarr’s, who have won one of the five titles on offer, complete the top three with 38 points. Their 2023 PJFC title compensating for any shortcomings at Premier Senior.

Then the gap opens. Knocknagree (20.5) are a long way back in fourth, having reached the knockout stages in each of their four seasons at Senior A, while also winning the PIFC title in 2020.

They lie ahead of Mallow and Kanturk, while a three way tie for seventh leaves Kilshannig, Aghabullogue and Cill na Martra tied to complete the top nine.

Clonakilty are joint 10th, just 14 points from the five seasons. Duhallow are the highest ranked Divisional side with 13 points, while Mitchelstown are 15th with 12 points, after having reached the knockout stages of the IAFC championship every season.
