Zodiac Jack wins Mayfield Senior Draghunt

Cork Draghunting: A Southern-Carrigaline Harriers double with Cionor Kidney and Zodiac Jack, and Jennifer Kenneally with Samantha's Dream, included are Dave Kidney and Ger Kenneally.
The humidity of the day did not deter a battling performance from Zodiac Jack who won the Mayfield Senior Draghunt in style.
Trained by Ger and Jennifer Kenneally the Southern/Carrigaline Harriers bitch was winning her first Senior Draghunt as she crossed the tape ahead of Tiger’s Boy trained by Gerry Murphy and Sheila Cummins of Shanakiel Harriers.
Championship leader Sean T of Griffin United ran a solid draghunt to secure third ticket as the winning connections looked elated in securing the win.
“It was a tough finish but thankfully our hound stuck to the task and we are over the moon to have broken our duck with her in this grade,” said Ger Kenneally.
It proved to be a great day for the Southern/Carrigaline Harriers club as they secured a senior double and a 1-2 in the Senior Maiden draghunt.
Kennelmates Samantha’s Dream got the better of Samantha’s Meg to secure a famous win for Dave and Damien Kidney.
The hounds looked tired on the finish but Misty of Shanakiel Harriers snatched third ticket for Gerry Murphy and Sheila Cummins.
Winning trainer Dave Kidney was thrilled to have secured his second win of the season in this grade.
“We are delighted as we are no different to all the trainers in our sport as getting a win certainly lifts your spirits,” Dave Kidney said.
The Puppy action at the same venue was a mixed bag with the maiden draghunt declared void as they completed the course over the allocated time.
In the Puppy draghunt, it took the hounds almost 23 minutes to complete the course but the result was a top-class performance on the finish from championship leader Slievemish Duchess of Clogheen.
When the hounds showed on the finish, they were a few in with a chance of landing the spoils but the one great trait that Slievemish Duchess has over her rivals is the willingness to get over the tape.
In the end she ran out a comfortable winner from the Gerry Murphy and Sheila Cummins-trained Kempest.
Casey Jack continues to show great consistency and she was rewarded with third ticket for Southern/Carrigaline trainers Ger and Jennifer Kenneally.
The remaining ticketing hounds were Mexican Jet, Starman’s Son and Mossgrove Rodger.
For the winning Clogheen trainer Damien Wade, it was time to reflect on another success for his hound after completing his ninth success of the campaign.
“To win any draghunt is hard but in recent weeks my hound has been showing tremendous drive on the finish and that’s a huge asset for any hound,” said Damien Wade.

The build-up to the Donal O’Mahony memorial meeting at Blarney on Sunday will begin in The Echo on Thursday.
The famous meeting now in its 26th year will this year be sponsored by Cornell News and the Cork association are indebted to them for their kind contribution.
