Championship leader Sean T of Griffin United produced another solid finish to win the Southern/Carrigaline Harriers Senior Draghunt at Ballygarvan on Sunday.

Due to the warm conditions, it was a 9am slip for the hounds and they drove the hunt at pace on good open terrain.

As the hounds approached the finish the winner found another gear and raced to the tape ahead of Wolfe Tone Lady of Northern Hunt who ran her best race in weeks for trainer Martin Wall.

Hannah Bawn of Kerry Pike/Fair Hill harriers ran another cracking draghunt for trainer Pat O’Mahony to take third place.

After the draghunt the winning trainer John O’Sullivan praised his talented hound.

"The recent good weather has made the ground harder for the hounds, but we are delighted in the manner Sean T came home today when the call went up,” O’Sullivan said.

Mayfield trainer Denise Rall was thrilled when her charge Magic’s Pride won the Senior maiden draghunt getting the better of clubmate Denis Wall’s Don’t Panic Lad.

Northern Hunt trainer John O’Callaghan is having a low-key season by his standard but he will be pleased with his charge Amazing who filled third ticket.

There was natural delight in the winner’s camp as trainer Denise Rall praised her charge.

“That’s two wins in a week with different hounds so we are delighted our kennel has come into form,” said Denise.

The biggest cheer of the weekend came in the Puppy race when Starman’s Son of Kerry Pike/Fair Hill harriers got his head in front for the first time this season.

There was natural pressure on the hounds in the warm conditions, but the winner did enough to see off Mossgrove Rodger, trained by Finbarr O’Sullivan of Shanakiel harriers.

The fast-finishing Slievemish Duchess trained by Damien Wade of Clogheen snatched third ticket with the winning trainer James Greene elated after the draghunt.

“This is a family effort as my wife Joy and her sister Susan all help with the hound and we have put in some hard work with him right from he was 10 weeks old.

“We are over the moon to win our first championship draghunt and hopefully this will give him some confidence in the coming months,” said James Greene.

In the Puppy maiden draghunt Shanakiel harriers trainer Finbarr O’Sullivan went one better when Mossgrove Dodger landed the spoils.

In another driving finish the winner held off clubmates Tiger’s Belle and Guinness Boy.

This was the first running of the Michael Coffey (Annie Mac’s) memorial cup and Southern/Carrigaline harriers member Ger Kenneally believes it was fitting to remember a man who was always generous to people in the sport.

The Southern/Carrigaline harriers club would like to convey its thanks to the farming community at Ballygarvan for the use of their land that ensured a successful meeting.
