Killeagh 1-21

A sensational haul of 1-14 from senior debutant Barry Walsh fired Killeagh to a memorable three-point win away to Midleton on Friday night, sealing promotion to Division 1 for 2026 – and setting up a repeat clash with the Magpies in the league final.

It had been a long wait for Walsh’s senior bow. An even longer one for those in Killeagh eager to see him unleashed at this level. And with his cousin Ben sidelined through injury, Barry’s long-anticipated debut went exactly as you’d have expected.

It took less than a minute for him to raise his first white flag, with the absence of Dylan McCarthy meaning he assumed free-taking duties.

While just 1-1 came from play, the goal was timely – arriving in the 44th minute after David Buckley won a restart and found Walsh, who arrowed a shot across goal and in. It pushed Killeagh 1-16 to 0-14 ahead, just as the game began to open up.

Midleton, with club and county legend Kevin Hennessy in attendance, rallied quickly. Points from Eoin Moloney, Cormac Walsh and a Cormac Beausang free cut the gap to two with 12 minutes left.

But Killeagh stood tall when it mattered. They matched Midleton’s urgency with gritty resolve, and in a feisty East Cork battle – where the whistle was busy – frees dominated. Beausang and Walsh exchanged two apiece to bring the score to 1-18 to 0-19 with seven to play.

Luke Dineen teed up Ross O’Regan for a crucial Midleton point on 55 minutes, but the visitors responded with conviction. Wing-backs Andy Long and Robbie Treacy were immense, smothering the threat of Pa White and Killian McDermott, while Seán Long nailed a high-pressure score under heavy attention from Alex Quirke and Seán O’Meara.

Walsh, inevitably, followed up with his 12th free to restore the three-point cushion.

Midleton chased the green flag but never got the sight they needed. Kian Farmer did claw it back to two, but another Walsh free undid the work.

In added time, Quirke won a 64th-minute free, offering Midleton one last lifeline. Beausang stood over it, as 11 Midleton players pressed forward, but Andy Long was there to block the goalward effort, sealing a heroic win for Killeagh.

It’s a result that sends them back to Division 1, leaving Erin’s Own to rue their failure to beat Na Piarsaigh earlier in the week.

The first half had little of the drama to come. All but two scores in the first 15 minutes were from placed balls, as Midleton led 0-6 to 0-3. They nearly had a goal too – Farmer firing low across goal only for Philip O’Neill to knock it clear.

Killeagh eventually drew level at 0-7 apiece after 24 minutes, with Ryan McCarthy impressing at half-forward. Quirke, meanwhile, was a central figure for Midleton with slick distribution and tireless running.

The tide began to turn when Richie Long was hauled down for a penalty, leaving it debutant versus debutant, Walsh versus Zach Smith.

Smith guessed right and made a great stop, but Midleton couldn’t push clear. They were level for a fifth time – 0-10 each after 30 minutes – before McCarthy and Walsh landed the last two scores of the half to put the visitors 0-12 to 0-10 in front.

Killeagh never fully pulled away, but always kept Midleton at arm’s length, landing enough jabs to see out the win.
