Four Cork girls have been selected on the Ireland U20 basketball squad that will play at the European Championships in Miskolc, Hungary at the start of August.

Gurranabraher Credit Union Brunell pair Ava Walshe and Rebecca Sexton will be joined by Emer Dunne from Glanmire, while their former teammate Rachel Lynch, who plays in the United States for Putnam Science Academy also makes the squad.

Ireland U20 women's head coach Karl Kilbride has named his final 12-player squad which includes three players who have been capped for the Irish senior international women's team in the last year, Grace Prenter, Caitlin Gloeckner and Aisling Moran.

Two players return from last year's squad and two new players, Izzy Sullivan and Lucy Hynes will make their FIBA Youth EuroBasket debuts in Miskolc, Hungary at the beginning of August.

Grace Prenter returns for her fifth FIBA Youth EuroBasket tournament, who also returns from last year's squad.

Eight of the 12 players are currently playing in the Irish domestic game with seven in the Domino's Women's Super League and one in Domino's Women's Division One, while four players playing in the United States will couple up with the squad.

Ireland start in Group B where they will face the challenge of Ukraine and Great Britain on Sunday and Monday in Hungary.

Ireland head coach Karl Kilbride was really impressed by the standard of the girls that came to the trials and he is excited to be working with his squad in the coming months before the tournament.

"We've been so impressed by the intensity levels and commitment from the group over the last few months," Karl said.

“Over the course of two open trials and six training weekends, they've made our lives as coaches really easy on the court, but that makes these kinds of decisions all the harder.

“At the 2024 FIBA Youth EuroBasket, Division B tournament We're in a really enviable position, where we have to leave players behind who are more than good enough to play for Ireland, but were just unlucky this particular year.

"We have an absolutely hectic summer ahead, with six games against Iceland, Croatia and Switzerland, before we kick off our EuroBasket campaign proper against Ukraine on August 3rd.

“We're so excited to be working with the group we've selected and with the commitment levels and improvements shown so far, we have a chance to have a really successful summer ahead,” Kilbride added.
