The Cork County Board have released a statement to The Echo in light of a number of Cork senior football players being released to their clubs a day after the Rebels loss to Meath last weekend.
John Cleary's team lost 1-13 to 0-12 in the All-Ireland SFC Group 2 Round 1 encounter at Páirc Tailteann last Saturday.
There was big surprise in Cork football circles with two key players in particular featuring in a crucial game for their club especially when the Leesiders meet Kerry this weekend in a crunch fixture.
Last Sunday, Castlehaven were able to call on three Cork senior footballers for their critical McCarthy Insurance Group Division 1 Football League contest away to Carrigaline.
Both sides had two points apiece with three games to go prior to throw-in. The back-to-back Cork Premier SFC winners were able to start Rory Maguire, Conor Cahalane and Cathal Maguire.
The Haven won 3-15 to 1-15 to move two points clear of the drop zone. Both Rory Maguire and Cahalane played much of the contest.

While there was an expectation that Cathal Maguire would play, given he hasn’t made the Cork bench recently, the inclusion of Rory Maguire, an All-Star nominee in 2023, and Cahalane was a surprise.
Both got substantial minutes against Meath the day before. Rory Maguire was due to start but got dropped and came on with 20 minutes to go. Cahalane was brought on after 62 minutes.
“Team management endeavoured to get all players on the Cork senior football panel valuable game time over the past weekend, as is their policy generally,” a county board statement to The Echo on Wednesday afternoon read.
“Those not on the official match day panel for Saturday were released to clubs across the weekend, while those who played less than 35 minutes on Saturday were all released to play with their clubs on Sunday, subject to them being fit enough to do so.
“Such decisions are at the discretion of team management, based on advice from the medical and S&C personnel involved with the team.
“There is no precedent established for future weekends, particularly on "free" weekends, when all players are generally required for challenge games or A v B games.” the statement concluded.

Out of the other subs that came on against Meath, no one else played on the Sunday. Ruairí Deane came on at the same time as Rory Maguire in Navan, but he didn’t play for Bantry Blues in their loss at home against Aghabullogue in Division 4.
Éanna O’Hanlon also didn’t play any part for Kilshannig in their win over Aghada in Kilbrin in Division 3. O’Hanlon came on for his Cork senior debut after 56 minutes the day before.
Luke Fahy and Hugh O'Connor's respective clubs had already played league action on the Friday.
In a statement to clubs today, the CCC decided that no County League fixture can throw-in between 2pm and 7.30pm this Saturday with Cork meeting Kerry in the second All-Ireland Group 2 encounter in SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh at 4.45pm.
A huge fixture for the Rebels in their hopes of making the knockout stages of the Sam Maguire.
