Clonakilty 2-13 Douglas 0-6

Clonakilty got their second win in the McCarthy Insurance Division 1 league following their dominant display against Douglas at Clonakilty.

With both having won their first-round games, Clon getting the better of Éire Óg and Douglas defeating Castlehaven, a close game was expected here.

Up to half-time, it was that with only two points between the sides at the break, when Douglas led.

But the second half was a completely different affair as, no doubt, some harsh words by Clon manager Martin O’Brien woke his side up.  They dominated as they outscored their opponents by 2-10 to 0-1. They were in control and Douglas' only point came two minutes from the end as the home side were in total control.

Few would have expected that at the break, as defensively both sides had been strong in that area for the first 30 minutes.

But, inspired by the likes of Liam Griffin, Sean McEvoy, Brian White and Jack O’Mahony, Clon drove on to a well-deserved win. Brian White put Clon in front, with Jack Cunningham replying for the visitors.

Points from Fergal Murphy and White put Clon 0-3 to 0-1 up after 20 minutes.

But Douglas finished the second half strongly with Harry Quilligan and Cunningham levelling it.

Late scores from Padraig Lucey and Kevin Shanahan had Douglas in front by 0-5 to 0-3.

A goal six minutes into the second half, from Luke Griffin, along with a point from Sean White, put them 1-5 to 0-5 up.

Jonathan Leahy got in on the scoring act, with two points in a row to increase their lead further, as by now Clon were dominating all over the pitch.

Griffin got his second point of the second half to increase their lead further, before Sean White added another, to make it 1-9 to 0-5 after 45 minutes.

He added a free before Clon got their second goal. A long ball in from David Lowney was punched to the net by Sean McEvoy, to kill off any hope of a Douglas comeback.

Chris Kenneally added another point, before he was replaced by his brother Des, who was making his senior debut.

Conor Russell got Douglas’ only score of the second half with two minutes left.

Late scores from Leahy and Sean White rounded off the scoring for Clon as they ran out thoroughly deserving winners.
