Corn Uí Mhuirí: Job done by DLS Macroom but still they must wait

Sam Kelleher-Leavy De La Salle Macroom is tackled by Eoin Kissane ISK in the Corn Uí Mhuirí, Intermediate School Killorglin v De Le Salle College Macroom in Killarney on Wednesday.
De La Salle Macroom got the victory they required against the pointless Intermediate School Killorglin side, in this crucial Group 4 Corn Uí Mhuirí Round three encounter, played in Lewis Road Killarney, on Wednesday afternoon, and now must await the outcome of the meeting of PA Mallow and Mitchelstown CBS later this evening at Kildorrery.
DLS Macroom started the day with a four-point inferior scoring difference but level on three points with last year’s beaten semi-finalists PA Mallow and now they are on five points thanks to the this comprehensive 16-point win, they now have improved their scoring difference to plus 23. This means that only a 13-point Mallow win over Mitchelstown this evening will prevent DLS Macroom from finishing top of Group 4 and straight through to the last eight in January.
It beggars belief when scoring difference is a factor that both games were not fixed for the same throw in time though Mallow will face a tough task to beat Mitchelstown CBS, not to mind by 13points.

This was a slow burner with Macroom and Killorglin trading points in the opening quarter, with Adam O’Neill scoring three points for the Kerry side with Giovanni McCarthy and Pat O’Donnell adding another as the sides was tied at 0-5 apiece after 24 minutes. Tom Browne (2), Sean O’Leary, Denis O’Mullane and wing back Eoghan Healy adding one each. However, DLS Macroom cut loose in the final five minutes of the half scoring 2-3 without reply with goals from O’Mullane and pacey corner forward Tim Sweeney and led 2-8 to 0-5 at the interval.
The third quarter was nip and tuck, with both sides just adding two points each but Macroom were gaining in confidence with Denis O'Mullane a towering figure now operating from the half forward line. He scored the match-defining score with a sensational goal that came after a 40-metre run through the heart of Killorglin defence in the 49th minute.

Then the flame-haired Tim Sweeney waltzed through for another Macroom goal, who were then fortunate not concede a goal when Adam O’Neill’s spot kick came back off the post.
But DLS Macroom deservedly collected the two points and enhanced their scoring difference and whatever happens, they have qualified for knockout stages.
