Glanmire 2-10

Boherbue 0-15

Daniel Molden’s injury-time winner capped a marvellous turnaround as Glanmire edged Boherbue to take McCarthy Insurance Group Cork IAFC glory at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday evening.

Trailing by seven points at one stage in the first half, two second-half goals proved the difference as Boherbue were reeled in.

Down by 0-10 to 0-5 with 26 minutes of normal time left, Glanmire began to harness some momentum. Darragh Murray, whose marauding runs from left half-back were a feature throughout, set up Cork hurler Cathal McCarthy – one of three half-time subs – for a point and Art Marron was unlucky to be denied a goal after a great block.

McCarthy saw a point attempt come back off the post but even so, they owned the middle third, aided by the wind. They were back to within two, 0-10 to 0-8, when they seized the lead for the first time since the opening score as Cian O’Donovan claimed a good turnover in Boherbue territory and fed Conor Neligan. While he looked to be fouled, he kept going and passed across for Conor Crowley to palm home.

Having gone 15 minutes without a score, Boherbue’s response was good. Three David O’Connor points, only answered by one from the excellent Cathal McCarthy, had them back in front and Darragh Moynihan extended the lead to two by the 58th minute.

But, again, the scales tipped. Daniel Hogan did well to carry the ball forward and he fed Shane O’Driscoll, who had been one of the three brought on at the break. The son of former Cork attacker John showed that he had just as deadly an eye for goal as his father with a thunderous effort – 2-9 to 0-14.

Boherbue sub Andrew O’Connor levelled once more with a free but Glanmire went again. Cathal McCarthy and Molden linked to set Murray away once more and when he was fouled, Molden did the needful.

With five minutes of injury time added, Boherbue had chances to level it but couldn't find an equaliser and the whistle brought delight for Glanmire.

In the first half, Boherbue had functioned like a well-oiled machine. While the opening four points were evenly shared, the Duhallow side soon found their groove.

A series of neat moves led to scores, with Alan O’Connor, David O’Connor and Dan Sheehan all on target, benefiting from the tandem power source of Liam Moynihan and Kevin Cremin at midfield – the latter making three impeccably-timed interventions that allowed attacks to be created. Brian Murphy, wearing 7 and nominally right half-forward, was also outstanding as he filled a number of roles.

Captain Gerry O’Sullivan became the third Boherbue player to point from a mark when he made it 0-7 to 0-2 on 22 minutes before David O’Connor got his third and fourth of the evening, two beauties.

That left them seven ahead as the clock moved into the red but David Lynch’s free ended 22 scoreless minutes for Glanmire and Olan Kelleher set up Daniel Hogan to leave just five in it at the break.

A Daniel Molden free for Glanmire cut the deficit to four points on the restart and they almost had a goal as Daniel Hogan’s catch led to a chance for Cathal McCarthy. He shot well, but Dermot Cremin’s save was excellent and, though play was brought back for a Glanmire free, they couldn’t profit.

When Sheehan’s point restored Boherbue’s five point cushion, it looked like they might continue to hold control of the game. Instead, a half-hour of gripping drama were in store.
