Glenville 1-8 Kinsale 1-3 (Match abandoned after 32 minutes)

This McCarthy Insurance Cork Premier Junior Football Championship at Páirc Uí Rinn on Friday night was abandoned after 32 minutes following an injury to one of the Glenville players led to an ambulance being called.

Both sides came into this particular clash with aspirations of making the knockout stages very much alive. When the game was stopped, it was Glenville that held a five-point advantage at 1-8 to 1-3.

In the opening half of action, Glenville got the opening score of the game thanks to a pointed free by Colin O’Keeffe. Kinsale responded in kind with a point of their own from Brian Coughlan.

In the ninth minute, Glenville hit the back of the net. It was a lovely orchestrated move, as a lovely pass from Josh Cooke picked out O’Keeffe, who turned and finished impressively to the corner.

Cooke then got on the scoresheet himself, thanks to a lovely taken point, as Glenville led 1-2 to 0-1 after 12 minutes played. Kinsale then got an overdue score as Cathal O’Leary slotted over.

Glenville had a purple scoring patch midway through the first half, as Cooke got another and Ciaran O’Leary landed a lovely score from play. Further scores by Cooke and Davin Sullivan kept Glenville in the driving seat, before Kinsale got a point in response through James Murphy.

The opening half concluded with the impressive Josh Cooke getting a gem of a point from distance. He was a very influential force in the Glenville attack and linked up the play well. At the break Glenville held a commanding advantage, as they led 1-8 to 0-3e.

A much-needed goal for Kinsale arrived at the start of the second half when Michael McCarthy blasted home from close range from a Coughlan fisted pass.

There was then a lengthy delay following a serious injury to one of the Glenville players.

Following a stoppage of over 40 minutes, the decision was taken by the relevant match officials to call the game off, which was greeted by a small ripple of applause as Cathal Nolan blew the full time whistle. Details for a refixture will be confirmed by the Cork County Board in the coming days.
