John Egan completes injury comeback by joining Burnley on a free-transfer John Egan has joined EFL Championship side Burnley on a free transfer on a deal that will last until the end of the 2024-25 season.
The defender moves to Turf Moor after finishing out his contract with Sheffield United.
This completes a long-road to recovery for Egan after he picked up a season ending injury during a Premier League fixture with West Ham United last October at the London City Stadium.
The Bishopstown native was actually linked with a move to the Hammers, he even played for them in a behind closed doors friendly last week.
After signing for the Clarets, Egan said: “First and foremost, I’m an ambitious person, an ambitious player and I feel like I’m at an ambitious club.
“The manager, staff and the players all want to be successful. I want to come in and add to that.
"I want to bring my experience and my ability into the group to help drive the group on.
“I’ve been here a few weeks now; I’ve got to know the lads and really enjoyed working with them and the manager.
“I’ve had some really good conversations with him. It’s been an incredible environment to come into. I’m delighted to be a Burnley player now and I’m looking forward to the future.”
Egan was a popular figure at Bramell Lane and he was a key part of how the team operated under Chris Wilder.
The defender was a central component in a back-three that took the Premier League by storm in 2019.
That led to impressive victories over Everton, Arsenal, and Chelsea during their return to the English top flight.
Sheffield United went down in 2021 and they narrowly missed out on promotion in 2022.
The Blades went back up by finishing second in the Championship in 2023, and they capped off a memorable season by reaching the FA Cup semi-finals.
Egan played a key role in that run as he scored an added time equaliser against Wrexham at The Racecourse. Sheffield United won the replay and were beaten by a treble chasing Manchester City side in the semi-finals.
Burnley’s aspirations will be different this season as it is all about getting back up to the Premier League after experiencing relegation last term.
The Clarets enjoyed a quick start to the season after impressive victories over Luton Town and Cardiff City and that came to an end with a 1-0 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Burnley goal is to get back to the Premier League under new manager Scott Parker.
The former England international took over from Vincent Kompany this summer after the Belgian was recruited by Bayern Munich, and he is known as a specialist in winning promotion after successful stints with Fulham and Bournemouth.
