Carrigdhoun have withdrawn from the Co-op SuperStores Cork Premier SHC.

The south-eastern divisional side were due to begin their campaign with a clash against Duhallow as the divisions and colleges section opens next week, but they have informed Cork County Board that they will not be fulfilling the fixture.

Having been absent, like many divisions, from the truncated championships of 2020 and 2021, Carrigdhoun returned to the field in 2022 and beat Muskerry after extra time before narrowly losing to Duhallow. Last year, they lost games to Muskerry, Duhallow and Carbery.

After the 2010 championship, Carrigdhoun opted out of the county SHC for the next three years but returned in 2014 and reached the fourth round, losing by three points to eventual champions Sarsfields. Thereafter, they continued to field until the impact of Covid-19 in 2020.

The intended format for the divisions and colleges section had been a round-robin of Carbery, Carrigdhoun, Duhallow and Muskerry, with the winners progressing to the second stage of the competition with Avondhu, Imokilly and UCC and two semi-finals leading to a final. The winners of the Denis O’Riordan Cup then progress to the quarter-finals proper.

Carrigdhoun’s withdrawal now means a three-way battle – Carbery take on Muskerry in Macroom next Tuesday night, June 4, at 7.30pm with Duhallow facing Carbery in Coachford a week later. Duhallow and Muskerry will then meet in Ballyanly on June 25.

Earlier this week, Beara withdrew from the McCarthy Insurance Group Cork Premier SFC, the second straight season where the west Cork side will not be involved.
