Cork Draghunting: Pat O'Mahony of Fair Hill/Carrigaline Harriers with Zion, the winner of the Mayfield Senior Draghunt.

ZION, trained by Pat O’Mahony of Kerry Pike/Fair Hill Harriers, showed his all his class to win the Mayfield Senior Draghunt before a large attendance on Sunday.

In a good open clean draghunt the winner who had finished runner-up in a midweek rerun draghunt at Glenville went one better on this occasion crossing the tape ahead of the reigning Senior All Ireland champion Tiger’s Boy of Shanakiel Harriers.

Blue Lad trained by Trina and Ken Long of Southern/Carrigaline Harriers has also had a good start to the season and after winning the opening draghunt at Glenville he followed up with a third place in this race.

Speaking after he draghunt the winning trainer Pat O’Mahony paid tribute to his hound.

“Zion is a decent hound, particularly at this time of the season and when he’s in the mood he can run with the best and its always nice to get a win,” he said.

In the Senior Maiden draghunt Riley trained by Barry O’Keeffe produce a solid run to cross the tape ahead of the consistent Penny’s Girl from the Shanakiel Harriers kennel of Gerry Murphy and Sheila Cummins.

High Maintenance of Kerry Pike/Fair Hill Harriers has given his charismatic trainer James Greene plenty of fun and he ran another cracking draghunt to snatch third ticket.

Trainer Barry O’Keeffe has been involved in the sport for many years but training a winner still gives him huge satisfaction.

“Delighted as Riley has improved and looking at his recent runs I felt this day would come and we are delighted he finally had his day in the sun,” he said.

The Puppy draghunt was hosted by the same club on Saturday and the damp conditions didn’t deter a large loyal attendance making their way to the venue.

When the hounds showed on the finish there were four hounds who looked to be in with a chance of landing the spoils but in the style of a promising youngster Knockane Jack finished like a scolded cat to win in style.

Trained by the father and daughter Southern/Carrigaline Harriers training partnership of Ger and Jennifer Kenneally the winner crossed the tape ahead of the John and Sean O’Sullivan Griffin United trained Ozzy T.

The Joe and Gary Freyne trained Not Now May filled third place with the minor tickets filled by Dingo, Jimmy Jack and Slievemish Lord.

There was natural elation in the winners camp as Ger Kenneally praised his young hound.

“When you rear pups and see them win a draghunt it's always a special feeling and we are also over the moon with our other pup Jimmy Jack who got fifth ticket so it was a good day for our kennel,” he said.
