Munster need to show their class as they host Zebre in Cork

THIS is the kind of game that might easily be forgotten about come season’s end, but Munster’s Friday night URC clash with Zebre at Virgin Media Park is a fixture that could end up being crucial to their campaign.
This game, and the two that follow against the Ospreys and Cardiff, are pivotal to the prospects of Munster qualifying for the end-of-season play-offs, with nothing less than a five-pointer being required this weekend.
Get the five points safely in the bag and this game will be quickly consigned to the recesses of the memory banks, whereas a failure to maximise the match-day points will probably lead to the game being referenced many months from now.
Currently, only four points are separating seven teams in the URC table, from positions fourth down to 10th.
And with Munster currently lying in ninth place in the table, it is time to get some big wins on the road, if they are to have any aspirations of climbing the table and retaining last year’s hard-won title.
A second-string Munster outfit beat Harlequins 35-43 in an entertaining friendly last Friday, with a lot of younger players putting their hands up for inclusion in the upcoming competitive fixtures.

Due to the importance of the next few matches we can expect that Munster head coach Graham Rowntree will go as strong as possible on Friday.

Tom Ahern, Jeremy Loughman and Craig Casey have been released back to Munster from Andy Farrell’s Ireland camp, and all will be expected to play big parts in Cork, while we can expect the likes of RG Snyman, Alex Nankivell and Antoine Frisch to come back into the side as well.
Academy back row prospect Ruadhan Quinn is available again after sitting out last week’s friendly due to the return to play protocols after receiving a bang of RG Snyman’s sizeable head against the Scarlets a fortnight ago.
Munster fans might be hoping to see what Sean O’Brien can do in his preferred position of centre, as he has had to fill in almost exclusively on the wing so far this season, or perhaps to see Jack O’Sullivan rewarded for his strong showing at the Stoop last Friday as well.
Ultimately, there can be no slip-up this weekend, against a Zebre side that have only a 20-17 victory over the Dragons at home to boast about from their last five fixtures.
