FIGHTER Aideen Mullins, the Siam Warriors Muay-Thai fighting sensation, received the Outstanding Achievement prize at The Echo Women in Sports awards at the Metropole Hotel last Thursday.

The 17-year-old is only back from Thailand after securing the WBC World Championship silver medal, narrowly losing out to English fighter Grace Griffiths, who she defeated twice previously, to end her 23 unbeaten run, a great achievement in itself.

She was joined at the function by her coach Martin Horgan of Siam Warriors Cork, father John, mother Cynthia and siblings Kayleigh, Anthony and Evelyn.

In 2023, the gifted teen won the Irish ISKA Senior Kickboxing, British ISKA International, the U18 European WBC Championship and three World titles, both in Muay-Thai boxing and kickboxing at the WBC World Festival in Venice and ISKA World Championships in Germany.

She is a remarkable example to any young person.

Her dedication and discipline are second to none, combining sport with her studies at Christ King Girls Secondary School.

The award was a complete surprise to her and Martin, her coach and her family did a great job keeping the secret from her.

“I am so proud to receive this award and to be honest, it was a complete surprise as I thought I was coming here with Martin to represent our club. It’s great for our sport to get the recognition it deserves because all our coaches in the club do so much great work with every member, especially the younger ones.

DELIGHTED

“Last year was a great year for me personally. I trained five nights a week and I'm delighted that all my hard work paid off as it can be a brutal and thankless sport.  I want to thank my trainers Martin Horgan, Micheal O’Mahony and Ryan Sheehan for all the hard work they have done with me over the years and now I'm repaying them by helping out with the younger members in the club."

Martin Horgan, the head coach of the Siam Warriors Club, was delighted that Aideen received such a prestigious award, as he thinks it gives the sport of Muai-Thai a major boost.

“I am so happy and proud of Aideen receiving this award and I think it’s so well deserved as her commitment is second to none,” Martin said.

This gives the club and sport a huge boost as it gives recognition to all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes.

"We have some really exciting fighters coming through the club at the moment and Aideen is one of our brightest stars.

"She is such a pleasant and likable young woman outside the ring, however, when she steps into the ring everything changes, as the eye of the tiger comes out in her."
