Sad Passing of Kiskeam GAA President John  P Murphy regretted

 KISKEAM GAA Club lost a stalwart and true gentleman on the passing of GAA club President John P Murphy.

A pillar of the Kiskeam community, John P made a vast contribution to his village, be it as Post Master in the local Post Office to the upgrade of the village and GAA Complex.

The late John P gave a life of service to Gaelic games as a player and administrator, acknowledged when GAA President Larry McCarthy launched the club’s history last November.

Kiskeam Club was formed in 1945 and won its first trophy in 1947, the Novice football championship.

On a breakthrough season, 1964 is fondly remembered by Kiskeam followers, John P was club treasurer and part of a panel that bettered Castlemagner in the divisional Junior Football final.

Into the county series, Kiskeam continued on their merry way and ultimately clinched outright honours on overcoming Crosshaven in Macroom. 

The legacy and the inspiration of the1964 team saw the development of club facilities, evident on a splendid playing field, dressing rooms and meeting rooms adjacent to the ground.

John P wrote in the recent published history book of the club coming a long way from modest roots.

“With just £6 in our kitty in 1971, the club purchased a field and we have been on a remarkable journey ever since. 

One can only marvel at the top class facilities, I want to pay tribute to each and every one who played their part, especially our dedicated officers who have successfully enhanced our club through tireless work and commitment”, he said.

Editor to the Kiskeam History book, “Reeling in the GAA Year 1945-2020” Donie Cronin dedicated the publication to the club’s esteemed club President whose service to Kiskeam GAA and the wider community was exceptional.

“I want to acknowledge the massive contribution of John P, better known as John Paddy Joe, a good foundation is vital for any project and John provided it for the club history. He began his research in the 1970’s collecting various material and speaking with former players and officers," said Donie.

Kiskeam GAA were saddened at the passing of their esteemed and highly respected President.

“John was a former player and member of 1964 County winning panel and held a number of club officer roles down through the years most notably Club Treasurer. 

"The legacy he has left our Club and Kiskeam will never be forgotten and will always be appreciated," said a club statement.

One of nature’s kind gentlemen, John P was a legend in Kiskeam and leaves behind wonderful memories. 

The achievements of the GAA and the transformation of the village gave him great satisfaction, his life and a lifetime of service to Kiskeam will never be forgotten.
