CHARLEVILLE CBS produced a gritty performance to defeat Cashel Community School in the Harty Cup preliminary quarter-final at Bansha on Wednesday afternoon.

This encounter was a right ding-dong battle with Charleville’s green flag after 42 minutes proving so important in knocking out the defending champions.

Cashel Community School started this match on the front foot as the Tipperary outfit hit the first two points inside six minutes, the first score was a point from a sideline cut courtesy of Oisín O’Donoghue, but Charleville settled down and two white flags of their own through Eoin O’Mahony and Eoin Horgan drew parity after eight minutes.

Cashel hit three of the next four points to push 0-5 0-3 ahead after 17 minutes, with O’Donoughue landing another point from a sideline cut. Wides were Charleville’s downfall as they registered four so far. A pair of points from Joseph Hickey drew Charleville level. But Cashel were able to pull away again and after 25 minutes they restored their two-point buffer, 0-9 to 0-7.

The teams traded frees before Charleville’s Gareth Gleeson bisected the posts to leave just a point between the sides at the break, 0-10 to 0-9.

The teams were level four minutes into the new half with Charleville hitting two of the three points at the start of the second-half. The game tipped along and by the 41st minute, Cashel led 0-14 to 0-13 before Charleville struck for a goal through O’Mahony with 18 minutes remaining as they led for the first time. A great finish low into the net from close-range.

The sides traded frees before another O’Donoghue point from a sideline cut left a point in it, 1-14 to 0-16 after 49 minutes. The sides exchanged white flags until Cashel hit two of the next three points to draw level as the game approached injury-time. The impressive Hickey pointed for Charleville to nudge his side in front, which turned out to be the winner.

The holders had a chance to draw level deep in injury-time from a free and force extra time, but O’Donoghue was unable to find the target with the full-time whistle sounding from the resulting puckout sparking wild celebrations from Charleville.
