COLÁISTE CHOILM picked up a point against De La Salle in the opening game of the Harty Cup at the Gold Coast in Dungarvan on Wednesday afternoon.
It could have been much more for the Ballincollig school in their first-ever Harty Cup game, they led by four points after 58 minutes, but 1-1 from De La Salle salvaged an unlikely draw.
This Group C encounter was a lively one in very difficult weather conditions. Despite the disappointment of not seeing out the game, Coláiste Choilm’s management team of David Bowen, Declan Hyland and Johnny Dwyer will take a lot of positives from this match. Coláiste Choilm were outstanding throughout, well coached, well-motivated with some brilliant performances all over the field.

Ted McGrath, Colm Clifford and powerhouse David O’Leary were outstanding in defence. Johnny Galvin hurled a world of ball in midfield while Josh McCarthy, Seán O’Neill and Eoin Dwyer excelled in the forward area. The Cork school were on the front foot from the off, not afraid by their opposition and led 0-3 to 0-2 after 12 minutes. The sides traded points before Coláiste Choilm rattled off 1-2 in five minutes. Dwyer with two frees, while Inniscarra’s Daniel Murphy took his goal well from close range after great work by O’Neill to set him up, 1-6 to 0-3 after 26 minutes.
Mark Hartley pointed for De Le Salle before the teams exchanged points before the break, 1-7 to 0-5 at the interval.
De La Salle made a storming start to the new half as they slotted over four points without reply, all from Hartley frees, 1-7 to 0-9 after 34 minutes. The teams swapped points once more before a Dwyer free pushed his side two points clear, 1-9 to 0-10.

Coláiste Choilm hit two of the next three points, as they led 1-11 to 0-11 with 15 minutes remaining. Coláiste Choilm were tigerish and were full value for their lead and a Dwyer free extended the advantage out to four points. The teams exchanged white flags, as the Ballincollig school led 1-13 to 0-12 after 58 minutes.
A comeback from De La Salle looked unlikely, but a Hartley point left a goal between the teams. It was heartbreak in injury time for the Ballincolig school as De La Salle sub Jack Kirwan goaled from close range. A winner couldn’t be found in the dying embers, but a performance to be proud of from the Cork school against a strong De La Salle side.
Coláiste Choilm will face Limerick’s Ardscoil Rís in the next match on Wednesday, October 25 at 1.30pm.
