Mayfield prove too good for neighbours Delanys in Seandun JAFC quarter final

Mayfield 3-12

Delanys 0-11

MAYFIELD booked their place in the AOS Security Management Solutions Seandún Junior A Football Championship semi final, as they defeated Northside neighbours Delanys, in their one-sided quarter final at Ballinlough.

After a promising start by Delanys, who were playing with the aid of a slight breeze in the opening half, Mayfield outscored the Dublin Hill side by four points to one in the second quarter.

The tide turned in Mayfield’s favour in the second half, where their three goals killed the game off as a contest.

In an evenly contested opening quarter, Delanys' Roy Downey pointed a free within two minutes of the throw-in and this was followed by a point from play by Calvin Healy, before Paul Condon opened Mayfield’s account with a pointed free.

Delanys Gary Gould exchanged points from play with Mayfield’s Dan Lucey.

Delanys opened up a four-point lead as Downey slotted over three points including two frees, before Mayfield took a grip on proceedings.

Mayfield tagged on four unanswered points, including a free by Joey Gibson, to leave the sides tied on six points apiece at half-time.

With the elements in their favour for the second half, Mayfield upped the ante as Nicky Kelly got a point within seconds of the restart.

Wayward kick-outs were to prove costly for the Dublin Hill side as Lucey drilled home their first goal from the edge of the Delanys square.

This was followed by a point by Gibson, before Downey pointed a free for the Dublin Hill side.

Mayfield worked the ball up the park from the kick-out and Dave O’Neill set up Condon for their second goal from the edge of the Delany’s square in the 35th minute.

Both sides scored four points each, with Downey converting a free in the 49th minute.

Condon completed the scoring with Mayfield’s third goal from the edge of Delanys square approaching stoppage time.
