ST FRANCIS COLLEGE dramatically saw off Coláiste Choilm in Cork IT yesterday to claim their first Simcox Cup since 1950.
The Ballincollig side fought hard but the winners ground out a narrow two-point win, with Shamrocks player David Andrews striking a 47th minute goal that helped them get over the line.
The victory was a long time coming, the school went close on a few occasions.
Coláiste Choilm opened well, going 0-6 to 0-1 in front after the first quarter. Sean Warren scoring some nice points from his post at full-forward, while at the opposite end county minor William Ronan played his part at the edge of the square. At midfield Éire Óg duo and county players Colm O’Callaghan and Jack Murphy were on top.
St Francis College recovered well, scoring some fine points of their own, and by half-time they were 0-5 to 0-9 adrift, Nathan Walsh, Matthew McAuliffe and Jack Lyons impacting in front of the posts. And the second-half would get even better.
Significantly they came good around the middle with captain Liam Grainger thundering into the contest. Aided by the breeze, two quick points got them up and running. There was a crucial let off as well, when county minor captain O’Callaghan blasted over the bar. At the end of the third quarter, the Rochestown outfit trailed 0-11 to 0-8.
But, the Roco boys were working incredibly hard, and despite an initial save, Andrews was on hand to find the net. When Lyons converted a free, they took the lead for the first time, and 10 minutes left to play.
Sub Fionnán O’Donovan then sent over a point to tie the scores and set up a grandstand finish. But that was their only flag in the fourth quarter, while St Francis College closed out with stylish points from Adam Hennessy and Grainger.
