Despite missing six inter-county players Douglas kicked on to reach round three of the SFC

ALL five city senior football clubs will be in the hat for the third round draw in the county championship at Páirc Uí Rinn tonight.

First-round winners, Nemo Rangers, St Finbarr’s, Bishopstown and St Nick’s were joined by Douglas at the weekend.

They recovered from the Bishopstown loss to inflict a 0-15 to 0-7 defeat on Dohenys with minor Conor Russell and the experienced Eoin Cadogan leading the way in Clonakilty on Saturday evening.

“We badly needed this win,” said manager Mick Evans. “We’ve seven Cork players in football and hurling at senior and U20 levels, but Eoin was the only one to play.” 

Injury ruled out Seán Powter, Kevin Flahive, Alan Cadogan, Nathan Walsh and Sean Wilson. Cork U21 hurling captain, Shane Kingston, was rested ahead of the All-Ireland final against Tipperary the weekend after next.

Carrigaline also made the last 16 following their dramatic 1-15 to 2-11 win over Ilen Rovers in the opening game in Clon.

Again, youth shone as Coláiste Chríost Rí Leaving Cert student, Mark Brosnan, came off the bench to score 1-2, including the winning point seven minutes into injury-time.

“We’ve a young team and hopefully they’ll get the belief and confidence to build on this win,” said manager John Dineen.

Clonakilty claimed the last spot in the draw with their 1-15 to 1-13 extra-time win over Newcestown in Dunmanway yesterday.

The four seeded teams are champions Nemo Rangers, beaten finalists, St Finbarr’s, and the losing semi-finalists, Duhallow and the 2016 champions, Carbery Rangers.

Five teams contest the relegation play-offs. They are Dohenys, Ilen, Newcestown, Kiskeam and Aghada.

The 16 teams in the round 3 draw are: Nemo Rangers, St Finbarr’s, Bishopstown, St Nick’s, Castlehaven, O’Donovan Rossa, Carbery Rangers, Ballincollig, Valley Rovers, Clyda Rovers, Carrigaline, Douglas, Mallow, Clonakilty, Duhallow and CIT.
