FOUR Basketball Ireland awards are heading to Leeside.
Kyle Hosford, Annaliese Murphy, Kieran O'Sullivan and Andre Nation were among the recipients of the Basketball Ireland Players and Coaches of the Month for prizes for October.
In the Men’s Super League, UCC Demons’ star, Kyle Hosford, scooped the Player of the Month. Hosford is currently averaging 23 points per game and has been instrumental for Demons throughout the season so far where they have been competitive in all games despite the departure of Adrian O'Sullivan and Lehmon Colbert.
Last weekend they inflicted a first defeat on Templeogue and in the league opener had the upper hand over rivals Neptune in the derby. Hosford was linked with a switch to Tralee but instead stayed on Leeside and he dropped 23 points for Demons in 20 minutes in a game up in Galway last month.
What made that achievement so impressive against Moycullen was that afternoon he had lined out for Delanys in the Junior Football Championship against Ballymartle, with his parents driving him up the road afterwards so he could come on at half-time for Demons.
In the Women’s Super League, Ambassador UCC Glanmire’s Annaliese Murphy was recognised after a phenomenal month. The 18-year-old Irish international star shot the lights out for her team and is among the top five scorers for the league. She nailed a slick six from nine three-point attempts in running up 29 points against Marble City Hawks.
With Mark Scannell at the helm again, Glanmire are motoring well despite losing some big names in the summer.
In the Southern Conference, the Player and Coach of the Month prizes went to Tradehouse Central Ballincollig’s Andre Nation and Kieran O’Sullivan again. In their second season in the national league, Tradehouse Central have nine wins from nine games with American import Nation amassing a staggering average of 42 points per game.
Only last weekend Ballincollig turned around a 15-point half-time deficit against neighbours Fr Mathew's thanks to Nation's 48 points, while veteran Ciarán O'Sullivan, a nephew of head coach Kieran O'Sullivan, has also been on song this campaign so far.
Irish international national Claire Rockall was the Women's Division 1 Southern Conference MVP, after the former Glanmire ace who this season switched back to her home club averaged 27 points.
