Midleton CBS 3-24 St Francis College Rochestown 1-15
MIDLETON CBS proved too strong for St Francis College in the Dr O’Callaghan Cup final at the 4G pitch in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Friday night.
Ahead by nine points at the interval, they continued to dominate and ran out 15-point winners of the Cork Post Primary Schools senior hurling title at the final whistle.
Midleton CBS captain Ryan McCarthy scored 1-8, Noel Cahill contributed 2-2 while Cathal Hickey notched seven points in a clinical display from the Harty Cup semi-finalists. St Francis College, meanwhile, were reliant on Alan Connolly who landed 1-8 of the Roco total.
As well, goalkeepers Brion Saunderson and Jack McCarthy were both in tremendous form pulling off some outstanding saves for their respective sides over the hour.
Cahill set the tone with his goal in the second minute for Midleton CBS. Points from Ray O’Halloran and Sean Andrews kept St Francis College competitive, however the east Cork side slowly began to pull away.
At the end of the first quarter, they led 1-6 to 0-5 and while the Rochestown team were well in contention, Midleton CBS piled on the scores on the approach to half time, after which they led 1-15 to 0-9.
The gap stretched to 11 points upon the resumption, but it could have been greater only for a brilliant stop by Jack McCarthy from a Ryan McCarthy penalty in the 40th minute.
Credit to St Francis College who never gave up the fight, and when Connolly found the net at the three-quarter mark, the deficit was cut to seven points. But their joy was short-lived as two minutes later McCarthy powered upfield and rifled the Rochestown net, 2-20 to 1-13.
As the match petered out to its inevitable conclusion, Midleton CBS closed with points from Hickey and substitute Eoghan Martin before Cahill fired his second goal at the death.
