HOLDERS Brian Dillons are on course to retain their Sports Turf Solutions Seandún Junior A Hurling Championship title, as they defeated Nemo Rangers in their quarter final tie, which produced five goals, at Ballinlough.
The Murmont side will meet Passage or Na Piarsaigh.
Following an evenly contested opening half in blustery conditions, the Murmont side held the upper hand in a one-sided second half in which Nemo Rangers were restricted to a late goal.
The opening exchanges saw John Horgan, who emerged as scorer-in-chief for Brian Dillons traded points from play with his namesake Conor Horgan, before the Murmont side were awarded an early penalty. John Horgan drilled home the game’s opening goal in the fourth minute.
Both sides each added further points from play before Kevin O’Donovan soloed through the Brian Dillon’s defence to score the Trabeg side’s first goal from the corner of the square in the eighth minute.
Persistent fouling was proving to be costly for the Trabeg side in the second quarter as John Horgan converted a hat-trick of frees, while Colm Kiely and Kevin O’Donovan replied with points from play for Nemo Rangers.
Conor Horgan was credited with the Trabeg side’s second goal as his shot from the corner of the square was deflected into the Brian Dillon’s net in stoppage time at the end approaching the break.
John Horgan responded with his fourth pointed free as the half-time score line read 2-5 to 1-6 in favour of Nemo Rangers.
Brian Dillons upped the ante after the interval as wayward puck-outs were proving to be the Trabeg side’s undoing.
Cian McCarthy scored the Murmont side’s first point of the second half and this was followed by John Horgan’s second goal form the corner of the square in the 33rd minute, which put his side in control of proceedings.
John Horgan pointed two further frees in the third quarter. McCarthy added his second point in this phase and Darragh Rodgers also got on the scoresheet with two points from play.
Nemo Rangers had their moments in the second half, but some spectacular saves by Brian Dillon’s net minder Declan Hourihane prevented them from adding to their 2-5.
Brian Dillons had the Trabeg side pinned back for most of the final quarter as John Horgan slotted over his eighth free and he also added his only point from play. Andrew Murphy also added a point from play.
Deep into stoppage time the Trabeg side’s only score of the second half came courtesy of a goal from Kiely, following a side line cut.
