Midleton retain the O’Callaghan Cup with impressive victory over the AG
MIDLETON CBS retained their Dr O’Callaghan Cup title with a deserved win over Gaelcholáiste Mhuire AG at Riverstown.
A game played in very wet and heavy conditions resulted in an entertaining Cork Post Primary Schools senior hurling final before a large crowd.
The city side were trying to end a26-year gap since the trophy last made its appearance at the famed north side school.
Aylwin Kearney, one of the Midleton selectors, was delighted with is side’s victory.
“Look we knew coming into it that it was going to be a tough game. Ourselves and the Mon have qualified for the knock out stages of the Harty Cup.
“They had a great game last week and we knew that they were very organised, so we did not take it likely coming into the game. It is great to be the best school team in Cork and obviously we can go on and do well in the Harty.
”Our backline was very strong again tonight and they have been the backbone of the Cork minor teams and once we got our feet and organised we kind of pulled away a small bit.
“It was still a very tough game and commiserations to the Mon’ and I wish them well in the Harty Cup.
“Thurles CBS will be another big challenge for us in the Harty on January 10.”
Once Midleton got into their stride with some excellent scores the Gaelcholáiste battled bravely to the finish but were unable to penetrate a solid Midleton backline that was superb throughout the hour and the Midleton goal was never troubled.
